Ya, your second guess is probably right. He won't fight back. After years of abuse from such a young age, it's so integrated into his life that it's all he knows. Physchologically, the abuse was just as bad if not worse than the physical abuse. His reactions of recoiling and shying away from pain is practically reflex to him. He probably hates violence of any kind now, so the idea of fighting back is no different than asking someone to touch a hot stove. They know that it is physically possible, but physchologically, they can't bring themselves to do it.

Naw, you good. I'm glad you got it off your chest. And critics... Gosh freaking CALM DOWN. People who write fanfics do it for the LOVE of the series. Something that ALL OF US share. If you are looking for something PROFESSIONALLY written, then go freaking read War And Peace or something. And if you are looking for something PERFECT, then give up. NO ONE is perfect. If you get RID of your ATTITUDE and ACCEPT the novel as it is, you will be able to ENJOY a new spin to one of your FAVORITE book series. Honestly, if this isn't what YOU WANT, go write a 200+ chapter fanfic ON YOUR OWN.

Cool, I've read some where you could cast in any language, including magical ones like parseltongue which is consider closer to magic and therefore more powerful. I thought it was really neat.
