the Brits hardly controlled anything in central Europe. By the end of the 19th century all European nations were hungry for war. They grew tired of skirmishing along colony borders or in foreign land, they wanted a real war. The British empire was hardly any stronger than the Germans or Russians at this point, the introduction of bolt action rifles kinda ruined all the fancy navy and English longbow supremacy they relied on for the past 600-700 years. The french fresh off of their high horse, were desperate to prove that they can beat the Germans in open combat once again. But except the Britain part i totally agree!

problem is, the 'hive-god' doesn't reside in the galaxy and all the fleets we're seeing are most likely scouts or advance troops. Bigger fleets are known to strip the warps hold away from anyone in the vicinity, thus making this undertaking unlikely to be successful.
nice, they know that a delicious planet is ripe for harvest, but they would loose the location if the beacon is cut, as in contrast to earth, everything moves in the universe. By the time they arrive, the planet would be long somewhere else.
