It is not about forgetting, it is the lack of use in a story, remember this (and other stories) are stories. Mortars are limited short range, have to be set up, etc. When you have characters fighting the bad guys, a mortar usually are not needed or best option. Let me give you a example how I decide what I use. When I have Sharpe go into a battle situation, I have a list of what support units like air support, artillery, mortars, gunships, tanks, etc. Then I pick the most logical one I think for that situation. In addition, Vanguard teams (as usual in most war stories) are usually fast pace, going where you need them to be, mortars cannot follow that but artillery and air support can can (both have far longer range and more of a impact). Now, this is just my opinion as I am not a professional writer or served in the military (thank you for your service), I just rarely run into a situation where that is the best option to use/show. It really just depends on what story the author is writing and locations.

Putting two and two together. If NATO can fight at night that means they can see at night somehow. If you see a missile following a dragon or something the human mind tries to find the answers. It is more of a educated guess because some monsters like dragons and snakes see with heat and can hunt at night, and NATO can. Maybe there is something similar.

Alien and strange new world. There not only fighting swords and bows. The US military has no doctrine how to fight a war like this, no experience, or know who these guys are, even all the different races. Having advance technology dose not remove the danger.

It is America with NATO. After Chapter 20 I barely follow the Anime and go my own way.

The problem was as the war dragged on; people forgot the plot. We did not have the right leaders and examples in place, so the war dragged out aimlessly."

With all respect, nukes and any other WMD is a horrible idea. It would be the worst approach to continue the story and end it. I assume you believe the US should have nuked Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and all the post WW2 wars the US been in. In addition, why would the US do something that would result in all of NATO abandoning them, turn Rory, Lelei, Tuke and all of their native allies against them and become the Empire they are trying to replace? It would just show Zorzal was right all along and everyone who sided with the US was wrong, the true Evil Empire. On top of that, why would you destroy land resources and kill your own troops? I am not going to Last Jedi the book for a shinny or lower the quality and standards. This is a character driven story so enjoy the ride. Its not like its been ridiculous on how the war progressed, it has bene very carefully laid out, realistically approached.
