When you consider his past experiences with Cal and Sura, isn't his prejudiced anger justifiable, that was my basis for his reaction, and indeed you are right, Thalen was supposed to be more guarded and all, but the mention of Northern’s mother changed things for him a bit, later in the story, we'd find out both of them are royalties and half siblings, not to say Thalen had issued a command that Northern can be killed if things go south.
