If the intent was to give that explanation as an introduction, it would have been more appropriate to leave his confrontation with Silva, but add that in the original series or at one point in the future he will also get closer by hiring Illumi, but at this point its was more a matter of weariness than partnership. When I read the part regarding the Zoldycks connection to them, I had assumed it was their connection to Meteor city, as many of their butlers comes from there and even Kikyo (the mother) was original from there.

According to my understand, at this point in the story timeline is before the original series started, so why would there be mention of Chrollo hiring Illumi to kill the Ten Dons when that only happened 9 months after the original series started? Very good story that is worth the read. Note that it has some small tie-ins with cultivation principles but its far less fantastical then actual cultivation source; more like a small addition to the principles of Nen.
