The whole purpose of the bridge was to being the immortals to the level of a mortal, where every single action would have consequences. You can be brave knowing you will always get better, but when you know your actions would inevitably break your body leaving you with lifelong pains, well it takes a certain kind of braveness or madness to pursue such a goal. Rowan usually pushed ahead knowing he would always get better, heck, he acknowledges many times that if you can't kill him instantly, you will never be able to kill him. Well, this is my thought process behind this chapter.
