When I Die

Growing up, I had always despised school. I guess you could even say hated and no it wasn't because of the weird hours or curriculum. I actually loved every aspect of school except for the people.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't too happy about waking up at six in the morning but after I hit my senior year, I didn't have to. Waking up at 10 in the morning and only having two classes was a blessing.

Sometimes I miss it. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of just having to worry about school. I miss having my parents to make decent meals and a house to live in. But, the world isn't normal anymore.

Its changed and I've changed. Some could say for the better but I think it was for the worst. I've had to do things since this started. Things that would send me straight to hell to sit side by side with Satan.

I don't believe in Hell or Heaven. I don't believe in God or Satan. If they existed, then why would God let such a thing happen?

I gripped the brick wall and peered down at the hundreds of walking corpses. They almost looked normal. Almost 1,000 feet above them and I can still hear the screeches. I can still smell the rotting flesh and copper.

Almost 4 months ago, The world shut down and gave way to a sickness. The government told us that it was temporary and the equivalent to a common head cold. A week after, The streets were overrun by cannibals- well everyone thought that. Soon it became a painful reality that these weren't just cannibals but mindless flesh eating things. I've begun to call them 'Biters' - the name 'zombie' seems a bit too cliché.

This was no "Zombieland" or "The Walking Dead". These things were different. They weren't dumb but they weren't smart. They didn't speak but they didn't moan or grunt either. They screeched and played games.

Growing up, did you ever hear the phrase "Cat and Mouse"? I hadn't heard it until my grandmother said it to me. And I never truly understood it until this whole apocalypse started.

Humans are the mice, running and try to fight for our lives.

Biters are the cat, chasing us and bringing us back home for supper.

And the world? Well, that's the playground.

Im determined to switch these roles. Make the mice the cat and the cat the mice.
