Chapter 1The Price of Effort

Hello!

After a long time away and still thinking about this story, I've finally made up my mind, and now I'm back. I wasn't happy with the way this story was going, so I decided to rewrite it. My focus is no longer on improving my English (I got tired of writing in another language. Seriously, sometimes it's just too exhausting), so I'm writing in Portuguese first and then translating it using AI.

I hope you'll enjoy this new version. I'll try my best, but I'm not promising daily updates. I'm not putting any pressure on myself about word count per chapter, but I will focus on delivering quality in this new version.

I hope you like it. Happy reading!

Among the many virtues that exist, effort is undoubtedly one of the most valuable. With effort, you can reach the top and become someone different, someone better. With effort, you might even reach the stars.

Everyone exerts themselves in some way, but for some, effort is simply getting out of bed every day. For others, it's turning the day into something productive. There's no universal way to define effort — it's variable, subjective, unique.

Its counterpart, laziness, however, is universal. If given the choice, most would prefer to live lazily rather than working tirelessly. And, if the world were truly fair, every effort made throughout life would be rewarded with great rest or relaxation at the end of all labor.

For Mateus, a 19-year-old young man, this would be the ideal world.

"Work hard, rest hard." This was the philosophy he carried like a mantra. Believing in this balance, Mateus worked tirelessly from a young age. He poured all his energy into securing admission to a good university and landing a great job.

"As long as I keep pushing myself, I'll eventually enjoy a long and well-deserved rest."

But the world isn't fair. And it doesn't reward everyone's efforts equally. In the end, whether hardworking or lazy, everyone meets the same fate: death.

And for Mateus, that fate came too soon.

Despite his youth and dedication, the inevitable happened. He pushed his body to its limits, neglected his health, and drowned himself in endless nights of studying. One day, seated at his desk with his eyes glued to a book, his body finally gave out.

His final thoughts, as everything went dark, were filled with regret:

"I should've enjoyed life more…"

And so, Mateus left the world, burdened with remorse.

——————————

"Damn it!"

With a desperate shout, Mateus shot up from his seat. His breathing was heavy, his eyes wide, and his body trembling.

'I'm supposed to be dead, aren't I?'

He tried to look around, but all he could see was infinite darkness. There was no sound, no light, no smell, or anything else that indicated life. Only the void. A silent and eternal abyss.

Time didn't seem to exist there. At first, Mateus tried to think rationally, but soon realized there was nothing to do but wait. Days, months, or perhaps years passed in that state. Gradually, he felt his consciousness beginning to fade, as if the void itself was consuming him.

Just as Mateus was about to lose all sense of self, something broke the silence.

[Welcome to the Super Lazy System.]

The sound echoed through the void like an explosion. Mateus blinked, confused, trying to locate its source, but there was still nothing around him but darkness.

"Super Lazy System?!" Mateus shouted, his voice dripping with disbelief. "I spent my life working hard, and now this is what I get?"

[Precisely, Host. Welcome.]

The voice sounded unnervingly casual, almost mocking the situation. Still disoriented, Mateus started wondering if he was dreaming or if the universe was playing a cruel joke on him.

"This has to be a joke…"

A man from an Earth gets the choice to start over in any Universe and chooses an Alternate Pokemon Universe. Let us see if his journey to the top is succesful and the impact he will have on his new world. Pokemon is owned by Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc. I just use their sandbox for the plot of my MC and my OCs. This will be a "slow" paced story, in fact it's "super slow paced", so please don't expect the MC to directly start his journey in 20 chapters or so, actually multiply that by like 15. A lot is going to happen before that happens. The first 10-20 chapters or so are information heavy, depending on what kind of reader you are. I try to keep my chapter length between 2000 and 3000 words per chapter. My release rate is 4 chapter/week for now. I have a patre*n for those that want to support me with access to some advance chapters as a thank you. patre*n.com/Azrail93 This is an alternate pokemon universe so there will be differences to the games, manga and anime. So if something in the story is different it is most likely on purpose. The original sources are seen as suggestions not laws. Differences can be: Type variants, evolution conditions, strength mechanics, world building and more. If I am at some point asking for reader input I will do so but otherwise I will ignore most suggestions. So please don't spam things like catch this pokemon or do that next. I have my plot planned and external input will be considered when asked for. If I see a suggestion that I believe fit my plot flow I will use it and will credit the commentor. Comments on spelling and grammar mistakes are welcome. I will try to correct said mistakes with time. Constructive criticism will be read and considered. Insult and hate comments will be ignored or deleted depending on severity. Readers naturally can comment their dislike but one worders will be ignored. If the reason for the dislike is explained I will read it. Like previously mentioned pure insults and hate comments will be ignored or deleted. The same is true for simple hate reviews or insulting ones. Reviews complaining about something I warned about, such as the slow pace, will be deleted as well.
