Chapter 136: wendigos.

It did not take long for a foul stench filled the night air. For as far as I could tell, some of the humans in the camp seemed to notice it too.

Then the screeching started. It was high and ear piercing. Some of it sounded like an exact copy of some of the voices of the people that were here, especially if they had children. But others sounded like an owl was dying. Especially the first one brought the humans great distress, while I just wanted to rip my ears of because of the sheer volume and frequency.

I walked trough the camp. The people barely noticed me as their gazes stayed fixed on the edge of the camp. Then the first one appeared. It was long and thin. The skin was a light grey and the bones nearly burst through it. its fingers were black, and its nails were long. But the discolouration in its fingers was not something natural like my red skin. Its fingers were black because they were dying off.

I could see every tooth it had in its mouth, as it had no lips. It had most likely eaten it when there were no humans around. Just like how it stared to eat its own flesh. A large part of its abdomen was missing along with some chunks from its arms and legs.

The creature stumbled forward and let out a tortured cry before it dashed from tree to tree. not even hindered by the large wounds that it had caused itself, it moved like it was made out of air.

Soon after a dozen more followed. Some were longer than I was, some were still around the size of a human. there were those that looked like someone had tried to stich a man and a deer together. But the ting that all of them had in common was that they all missed pieces of their body that they had eaten themselves.

I shivered when I thought back to the times when I had eaten human flesh. If I had not been a demon, then the chances were that I would have ended up like one of these creatures.

The people in the camp were unsheathing their swords and shooting arrows at them while chanting to whatever gods they believed in. tough the later truly annoyed me, it could have been worse. They were most likely praying to an angel that they had mistaken for a god or merely an aspect of one of the gods that they believed was the entire being. But it did not matter.

I stretched out my wings and dashed forward. Moving father than they could, I managed to slit the throat of the smaller ones.

I personally thought that this was the best approach. The smaller ones, tough they lacked in strength, were just as ferocious as their larger counterparts. only, the smaller ones could enter houses more easily and better hide between the trees to lure children into the forest. They were also smaller targets for the people that were firing arrows.

I suddenly felt a small sting on my back. one of the archers had managed to shoot an arrow right in between my scales. It did not hurt, and the arrow soon fell out. But I would get back on that archer later.

Now I just continued killing. The blood of the wendigos already clung to my claws like a shadow. The blood was even darker than my own. It stank and it had most likely been rotting inside the bodies of the wendigos.

One wendigo with antlers tried to pierce my side. But all it managed to do was to scrape the skin of my stomach as its antlers were deflected by the scales on my side.

Enraged I grabbed the wendigo by one of its antlers so I could rip the other one off. Then I completely impaled the wendigo with its own antler. It fell to the ground and cried in pain before I crushed its scull.

The remaining wendigos had now finally understood that I was the main threat on this battlefield.

Like as if they were being controlled by an hivemind. They circled around me as if I were in the eye of a storm.

Now that they all were in roughly the same place, I kicked off the ground and flew up. There I let fire rain upon them.

I grinded my teeth as their cries of pain nearly echoed through my entire being. But when I reached the ground again, I saw how a lot of them had survived. They were burned, with patches of skin and flesh hanging from their bodies.

I could almost swear that I could see the fear in their white, dead eyes. Maybe it was just a trick of the mind, or maybe it really was just a shard of humanity that was left in these creatures.

They turned around and tried to get back to the woods where it would be easier for me to lose them. but I had already decided that I was done playing with my food.

Stone spikes rose up from the ground, killing them, just when they had thought that they could have made it.

Even tough they were no longer human. their heart still needed to beat to keep them alive. And as it turns out, a hart is not good at beating when it is impaled with a stone spike.

Like that all of the wendigos had died. Leaving their twisted corrupted souls for me to take.
