A swift fist smashed a boy in the face. His body reeled back following his head. He wasn't sure where he was or what was going on.
Regaining his bearing, he dodged the ensuing kick.
He threw a punch of his own but missed by a large margin as his nose bled. Across from him stood another boy about his age, laughing.
"Once again, here you are taking a beating, Sum Gei. Once again, you've entertained me greatly. But this isn't the village anymore. We're in the test to join the Lightning Tiger Sect.
I can't believe you thought you could make it into the sect when you can't even defeat anyone in our village. Your baseless confidence outmatches your trashy abilities!
I know you've always wanted to become mighty, but that dream, I'll end it today for you. Someone like you could never become strong.
Tears welled up in Sum Gei's eyes as he listened to his opponent. With all of his heart, he wanted to defy the words of the boy he was fighting. However, those words proved to be true.
Taking a deep breath, the boy regained control of his emotions and the mounting tears no longer threatened to overflow.
Steeling his resolve, he attacked repeatedly but was unable to land more than a couple of light punches.
Sum Gei was finally knocked out with a spin heel kick he never saw coming. The force of the kick was so strong that he blacked out for a moment before opening his eyes and seeing the sky.
The surprising thing was that the other boy was panting. Defeating Sum Gei wasn't nearly as easy as the boy claimed it was.
Although he only landed a couple of punches, the other boy had trouble even touching the hem of his garment.
If not for an act of desperation, on the side of the other boy, and getting lucky, the match could have lasted longer.
Those in the audience found the winner's performance even funnier than the loser. By all accounts the loser did an amazing job, give his realm.
It was a missed matched pair. Sum Gei was a mortal level one fighter, and the kid he fought was a mortal Level 3 fighter. So two small realms separated the two.
It was only a few seconds that he lost consciousness, and when he awoke, Sum Gei didn't bother waiting to hear the results.
He stood up and descended the platform. He already left the area when a cold voice from a man in splendid robes sitting on a sizeable towering chair sounded out lazily.
He looked down at the winner: "Mu Ting wins, and Sum Gei loses.
However, in my eyes, you're both trash, and we don't need either of you. Get out of here!"
"But, Sir! I won; according to the rules, I can go forward! I can keep fighting!" Mu Ting pleaded with the older man.
"For a Mortal Level 3 fighter to struggle so much when fighting a mortal level one fighter, do you think you can go any further in this competition?
We need All-Stars, we need the best, we need geniuses, and that isn't you."
Mu Ting looked at the old man with a belly full of fire. Anger boiled in his heart, but there was nothing he could do. Then, finally, he turned away and left the stage.
He had never been treated like this in his life. In the village, he was the strongest fighter. He was the genius of the town, but here he's been treated like trash.
Maybe it was his fault for playing around with this "old friend," but he couldn't accept losing a spot in the sect despite winning. It wasn't fair!
Running off, he chased down Sum Gei, who was leaving the trial grounds of the sect. It is clear from his face he is disappointed but even more, he was determined!
The sound of feet running behind caused him to pause, and he turned back. Before he could entirely turn his head, Sum Gei felt two hands shoving.
Flying forward and rolling in the dirt, he layed in stunned for a moment. Dusting himself off he looked behind. There, his attacker stood, it was none other than his bully from the village, Mu Ting.
"Mu Ting, what do you think you are doing?" he asked.
Examining the boy, he really couldn't figure out what his problem was right now.
"You useless piece of trash! You bring everyone down. You robbed us. You robbed the village of a chance to rise.
I'm sure you're happy that I've lost my spot in the sect. I'm gonna make you pay for that!" Mu Ting said.
At first, he was stunned, "Lost your spot, what did you do and why are you blaming it on me? Since you defeated me, you can compete until you are defeated," Sum Gei responded.
"Well, the old Master said that if since I couldn't defeat a useless Mortal Level One in less time, then there was no point in joining the sect. Instead of running around the stage, you should have fought me like a man!" Mu Ting roared at Sum Gei.
"It sounds like your problem is with the old Master, not me. Are you always going to blame your failures on others? You will never get far in life if you keep acting like that.
I accept my loss, do you think I'm going to complain and cry about my loss? Now, I will do everything I can to build myself up and do a better job at the next sect tryout.
Since you lost here, why don't you go to another sect and try out? Instead of coming to pick up a fight with me, you should better yourself." Sum Gei sincerely advised his rival.
"Oh, I'll try out another sect, but first, I'm going to pummel you!" Mu Ting was getting angrier and angrier the more Sum Gei spoke.
"Don't expect me to sit here and let you beat me up. I'll give you a bloody nose at the very least!" Sum Gei struck a fighting pose waiting for the other boy to attack.
A small crowd gathered around the two boys. Then, feeling the pressure, Mu Ting felt compelled to attack.
Running forward, he threw his right fist, but Sum Gei dodged it and threw a counter punch. Mu Ting dodged as well. Every subsequent attack drew the two boys closer to each other.
Losing his patience, Mu Ting tried grabbing Sum Gei and throw him down. But, unfortunately for him, Sum Gei had the same idea, leading to the two boys holding each other and falling to the ground together.
Wrestling on the ground, each boy attempted to mount their opponent so that he could throw punches and elbows.
As the boys continued wrestling, the ground suddenly shook and rumbled. The sound grew louder and louder! The violent vibrations and explosive sounds ended the fight.
Laying on his back with a fist cocked back, Mu Ting did his best to discover origin of the racket.
A nearby cliff exploded into thousands of debris, showering everyone in bullet-like rocks.
Mu Ting and Sum Gei scrambled from the ground, searching for the cause of the explosion.
It was then that they saw numerous people standing on swords flying in the sky. It was like a flying legion of display models. Nearly every cultivator standing on a sword had their hands behind their backs.
The display of casual might impressed the onlookers.
The airborne aggressors swooped toward the trial area descending from the skies. Lightning Tiger Sect Teachers attempted to respond to the attack, but were overwhelmed.
The young hopefuls in the trial area died without even understanding what was going on.
Since Mu Ting, Sum Gei, and their fellow villagers left the trial grounds, they were outside of the range of the attacks.
Given time to understand the situation, it was clear, they were caught in the middle of a fight between sects. No one hesitated fleeing the area of the bloody sects battle!
One of the aggressors flying on a sword turned his sword after catching a glimpse of Sum Gei's group. The cultivator made a sign with his right hand and pushed out.
An energy beam shot from his hand causing the ground near Sum Gei to explode. His body erupting from its spot landed in a grouping of bushes behind a big rock.
Others were flung about as a result of the explosion.
Taking no heed of Sum Gei and the others incapacitated by the explosion, the cultivator pursued Mu Ting. Sum Gei peered from within the bushes and could see Mu Ting trying to escape.
Another sword appeared out of thin air in the right hand of the cultivator. Sum Gei instantly understood he intended to behead Mu Ting.
Sum Gei grabbed a rock about the size of a human fist, erupted from the bushes like a volcanic explosion and threw it at the head of the cultivator.
The stone successfully struck the cultivator and knocked him off the sword.
Mu Ting was surprised to discover he was still alive despite knowing a sword was coming for his head.
He saw Sum Gei's still outstretched arm pointing toward the downed cultivator.
Right as Mu Ting was trying to yell something to Sum Gei, the cultivator got up from the ground, enraged.
"Courting DEATH! I'm going to make you wish you were dead!" The grounded cultivator screamed.
"Is it my fault you fell off your sword? It would be best if you took more lessons so it won't happen again. I also recommend not chasing people with a big sword like that, someone could get hurt!" Turning around, Sum Gei ran toward a bunch of rocks.
The cultivator was even angrier and roared as he chased, on foot, after Sum Gei.
"That guy knows how to tick people off!" Mu Ting said under his breath. Seeing none of the other cultivators paid attention to them, Mu Ting grabbed the other kids from his village to escape.
"What about Sum Gei? He saved you and us!" One of them said.
"I know, and I owe him, but first, we have to get out of here. I'll try to help him, but we can't afford to be seen by those others on the flying swords. Come on!" Mu Ting commanded his friends.
Meanwhile, Sum Gei was fleeing for his life. He could feel the cultivator catching up to him. a root seemed to spring up from the ground and tripped him. He tumbled forward and fell over the side of a cliff.
The cultivator behind him saw him suddenly disappear and slowed down. He arrived at the edge in time to witness Sum Gei roll down the steep hill until his feet disappeared.
Sum Gei stopped rolling and found himself in a pile among rocks and dirt.
As he started to move, he heard growling. Looking toward his left, where the sound came from, he saw a rock leopard with its ears back, and its body pulled into a shadowy outcropping of rocks.
Its fur stood up and its eyes reflected the light of the sun.
"Uh oh," he said.
