...

*GASP* a boy woke up in a white room.

'Where am I?' The boy quickly started looking around, finding himself laying on a bed completely naked. In a completely different place from the streets.

He got out of bed and looked around for some people or clothes. He saw a chair near his bed which had black boots, pants and a shirt.

He got dressed in the clothes and deduced 'Hm, I got kidnapped… but this is some suspicious kidnapping, giving me clothes?' why was he not panicking? Well Jay was incredibly different from others… he was superior, while others panicked, he started thinking, while they cried, he relished the challenges life threw at him… and it doesn't help that he lived in the streets.

And he was completely numb to surprise, it did not help that he had a mystical system, which resembled a game.

'Let's see what will happen to me… and maybe the 'STATUS' screen will finally prove useful' Jay thought with a small smile… why should he be afraid of others? Afraid of death? Hah! We'll all die sooner or later.

He saw a white door in front of him, he stepped forward, but a chain fell from his pocket.

He bent down and examined it; 'Jay 007' was engraved on the metal.

He didn't know what it meant but continued walking near the door. He was about to touch it, but it opened automatically.

*SWISH* the door opened, and Jay peered out slightly, finding out that his door led to a hallway, he saw no people and stepped out – walking through the hallway.

After walking for a minute, he came to a stop. The hallway had ended and a door similar to his was blocking the way. It opened when he neared it.

The door led to a giant room, with a glass wall towards the ceiling. Behind the glass were adults, dressed in white coats. They were thoroughly examining me and other children in the room.

'Hm, veery suspicious' Jay thought.

Jay looked at the other kids, many of them were sobbing or clutching their feet. Some were talking – others sitting quietly. Everyone had the same clothes as Jay's.

A few more kids entered through some doors. One of the adults cleared her throat.

"I am Dr. Catherine Halsey. I am the director of the program you have been recruited into. You have been called upon to serve, and you will be trained… you will become the best we can make of you. You will be the protectors of Earth and all her colonies… and you will be loyal to the ECC," she said, pausing for a second, "There are 150 in total, currently. There will be a selection process, through which only 75 will make it through. Then you will undergo augmentations, with a 50% survival rate – leaving roughly 35. Those 35 will be the best soldiers the universe has ever seen. Let's hope you are one of them," she fell silent, gazing at us.

She spoke again, "Your drill instructor is Senior Chief Petty Officer Mendez. I expect you to follow his every command. Mendez you can take it over now."

All that was in Jay's mind was one question 'Best of us? So, they'll give us FOOD?' he was drooling already, he didn't mind following orders – he didn't have such stupid emotions as pride.

And who cares if he dies? Either he dies in the streets or here – and either way it doesn't seem like they would let some kid say what they were doing here.

'Soldiers are cool' Jay's final thought. So, he was ready to overcome everything.

*DING* a screen appeared near his face, he turned to it not surprised in the slightest.

*Quest: Survive = survive the Spartan II program

Failure: Death, paralysis

Success: 2000 in all stats*

'… life is good.'

He was brought out of his thoughts when a soldier stepped forward. "ALRIGHT RECRUITS! MARCH!" he yelled.

As if that was their cue, the rest of the guards started herding us towards a door. Everyone who resisted was poked with an electric rod, (Chad Jay is smart so he didn't resist) they were treating us like dumb sheep! And Jay didn't give a flying fuck.

We were lead outside. The blue summer sky was beautiful, although the landscape was completely devoid of greenery. I had no clue where I was.

"Welcome to Reach," Mendez whispered, and the shouted "NOW DROP DOWN AND GIVE ME 100 PUSHUPS!"

I didn't know what 'pushups' were but dropped to the ground. Mendez did this weird thing, were we held ourselves with our hands and feet, and then bent our arms at the right angle. Next, we had to straighten our hands – and do it over again. After forever, when I was shaking and covered in sweat, Mendez shouted, "WATER BREAK!"

Some of the guys went into a building and came back with water bottles. Bottles were distributed around. Once I got mine, I gulped it down.

Mendez gave us a few minutes, and then shouted, "100 SIT-UPS!"

He did another weird thing. He laid down on the earth with his knees bent and sliding his hands across the ground until he could touch the back of his feet, and then returning to the same position.

I copied his movements, and after some time he yelled, "BREAK!" my stomach was aching. More water bottles were passed around, and once more I gulped mine down.

"NEXT UP, 5 MILE RUN!" Mendez shouted after a minute or 2; my body ached all over and my stomach was being assaulted by hunger. Mendez started running, and we followed behind. Everyone was sweating a lot and panting – including Jay.

'Damn this hurts! But the FOOD!' Jay thought distracting himself from the pain.

Mendez led us around, and then we ended up at the building again. This time, however, it was a different part. There stood a blond lady and an eagle aside a house sized building.

The lady motioned us inside, smiling. We gratefully walked through the door, collapsing into the chairs attached to the desks inside. Once we were all inside, the lady walked to the front of the room. "I am the AI Athena," she said, then motioned to the eagle "And this is the AI Freedom. We'll be your teachers. Please pick your holopad from the front of the room. They are labeled with your name and number."

I got up and went to the table, with the holopads on it. I had stolen one before, so I knew how to use it. I searched for my name and found a holopad that said Jay 007. I now knew what the chain meant.

I turned to go back to my seat I had been sitting in, only to find it occupied. A redhead prick sat there with his arms crossed, helopad sitting on my desk.

I walked over and stood next to him "I believe that you are sitting in my seat," I said calmly.

"What are you gonna do 'bout it?" he said, living up to his prick-like appearance.

"Well that depends. Will you give me back my seat, or will I have to take it."

He refused to budge, I was about to slam his head into the table, but another boy came up and said in an odd accent, "Give 'em back his seat."

The redhead snorted, "What you gonna do earth-born?"

The boy pushed me out of the way and punched the prick in the nose. "That's what I'm going to do," he growled, "Don't ever call me earth-born." Blood sprayed out of the pricks nose, Jay chuckled, and Athena said "ENOUGH! Aaron-051, Jade-013, disciplinary actions will be taken."

A group of medics entered, and escorted the prick out. I took my seat back and the boy who punched him returned to his seat.

"Well, that's taken care of" she said, sighing, "I trust you are all hungry?"

"YES!" all of us shouted.

One of the guards came in, holding crackers and water. He distributed them, giving 5 crackers and a cup of water to each person. I was happy even with the small portions, unlike the others.

"Please come up to the holotable," Athena said.

We did as told, and she projected what looked like mountains.

"This is Thermopylae, Greece. Here 300 warriors from the ancient city Sparta stood against an army of unknown numbers from Persia."

As she spoke the holotable projected 300 figures, in an ancient battle formation. In a space between the mountains, the Persians gathered. Their army was so much bigger… I wondered how those 300 soldiers felt facing a much larger army. They must have been very brave… the Persians started to attack on the screen, and the Spartans defended. Soon, however, the Spartans were flanked from behind, and got circled by the massive army.

"The Spartans held up for 7 days before being defeated. In the end, all of the Spartans perished, but they took roughly 5x as many men's lives as they had originally." Told us Athena.

We watched the last Spartan die, and then the holotable went blank.

"Return to your seats, please," Athena told us, "On your holopad, you will find a copy of the battle, and your homework for tonight."

I clicked mine to life. It scanned my eye and then logged me in. a few icons were displayed on the screen, one of them was labeled 'Homework' and another labeled 'Class activities'. I clicked on the 'Homework' icon, and a calendar popped up, with the days date highlighted. One assignment was listed there; questions that I had to answer about the holotable simulation.

"Recruits, Chief Petty Officer Mendez will escort you to recess," Athena told us.

Mendez stepped into the building. "COME ON RECRUITS! TIME TO GO TO THE PLAYGROUND!" he shouted.

We got up, expecting the worst.

We, of course, had to run to the 'playground'. The playground turned out to be in a small forest, hidden behind a few mountains. It was basically a giant jungle gym, with ropes, ladders and bridges and a lot of other stuff. At the topmost point of the jungle gym was a bell.

"WELCOME TO THE PLAYGROUND!" Mendez shouted. I was starting to worry, if all he did was yell. "THE GOAL OF THIS EXERCISE IS TO BE THE FIRST TEAM TO RING THE BELL! YOU WILL BE PUT INTO TEAMS OF 3, AND THE LAST 5 TEAMS TO RING THE BELL WILL GO WITHOUT SUPPER!"

That wasn't good. My team better win this!

"HOWEVER, THE FIRST WINNING 3 TEAMS WILL ENJOY DESERT ALONG WITH SUPPER!"

Okay I'm not losing…

"LINE UP INTO 3 TEAMS!"

We did so, I ended up with the guy who punched the prick and a girl.

The 'earth-born- turned to me and grinned. "So we're in the same team, huh?"

"Guess so" I said.

"I'm Jade"

"Jay"

I turned to look at the girl, but she was silent.

"ON THREE, TWO, ONE!"

I took off in a run, and started climbing up the jungle gym. I heard feet pounding behind me, and then I saw Jade on top of one of the platforms. He reached down, and I grabbed his hand. "She's holding the ropes," he said, referring to the girl.

"How'd you get up so quickly?" I asked.

He grinned, and jumped, grabbing onto the edge of the platform above us. He hauled himself over and said, "That's how."

I copied him.

He ran towards the ropes, and sure enough, the girl was keeping everyone away. We now had 2 more platforms to go.

"Girl! Get on my back and hold on!" he said, and she did so.

He vaulted her and me on the platform. Then the girl held Jay's legs and he fell over the edge, grabbing Jade's wrist and pulling him near us.

"Let's go ring the bell!" Jade said, standing up. I stood up too, and then we took off towards the bell, I saw another team – a boy leading them. One more platform to go, and then we would win.

The other team's leader separated, running towards the bell, I did the same running full speed. The last platform was low enough to jump onto. We both ran, and then jumped – both of our fingers nearing it, but I touched it first – winning us first place.

*RING* we both rang it nearly at the same time. I turned to the boy and smiled, extending my hand for a handshake "Good game"

He smiled lightly and then shook my hand, and I walked off to my team and he – his.

"007, 013, 058, 117, 087 AND 034!"

I asked my team "Does he want us to go down there?" Jade asked me in a whisper.

"Who cares? We WON!" I responded in joy.

"Yeah… OK, your right." Jade nodded.

"Want to jump?" the girl talked.

"Sure" Jade said.

We jumped off, and I realized it was much higher than I expected. I neared the ground and rolled – landing safely.

"Oof" Jade made a sound in his landing.

The girl landed softly on her feet.

I stood up and dusted my shirt off.

The bell rang again, and the girl shouted, "Let's go!"

We sprinted to Mendez, nearly running into him, but we stopped ourselves – standing behind him.

"058. 013. 007" looking at each of us as he said the numbers.

I shivered slightly, embarrassed because I was the skinniest here.

I noticed a hint of a smile on his usually sone-faced face.

"There's hope for you, Spartans." He said, we couldn't ask what he meant by 'Spartans' because he shouted again. "LINE UP, IN THE ORDER YOU RANG THE BELL!"

After a few seconds there was shuffling behind me, as the other teams lined up in order.

"LAST 5 GROUPS, STEP AWAY FROM THE LINE!" More shuffling came.

"YOU MAY GO STRAIGHT TO THE BARRACKS!" Mendez shouted and an AI escorted the losers.

"THE REST OF YOU, COME WITH ME!"

With that he started walking back to the building, we followed.

By now whatever kept me going, was gone. I was exhausted and starving. Every muscle in my body ached.

'I'm rethinking my choices… if tomorrow will be like today…' Jay was shitting bricks.

Somehow, I made it to where we were going.

"THIS IS THE MESS HALL!" Mendez told us, "HERE IS WHERE YOUR SUPPER WILL BE SERVED EVERYDAY! IF YOU'RE NOT HERE BY 5:30 AT THE LATEST, YOU'LL GO WITHOUT IT! NOW GO EAT!"

I stepped through the door and grabbed a plate. I was so tired; the only thing that held me together was the concept of 'eating'. I quickly gobbled everything, not minding what it was. Once I finished, I brought my plate to the plate deposit, and left.

An AI escorted me to the barracks, and I collapsed on the bed closest to the door.

The Synthesis Wizard

In a world where elements lay barren and powerful wizards had abandoned their homeland a millennium ago to explore the multiverse, Sunan found himself reincarnated as a noble scion stripped of his title. This world, once brimming with magic and wonder, had fallen into a desolate state, and wizards had become mere legends. Sunan was acutely aware that after a thousand years, the elements would awaken once more, heralding the return of the wizards and ushering in a new era of prosperity. He understood that his path was clear: he must train diligently to become a wizard himself and survive until this glorious age arrived. “Resources are scarce?” he mused, determination flickering in his eyes. “Then I’ll just have to synthesize them myself.” With that thought, he activated the Synthesis Cube, a device that granted him the ability to combine materials into something new. This Cube was not just a tool; it was a symbol of his potential in this world, reflecting his status as a player in a game he once played. As he set to work, the Cube glowed with possibilities, presenting him with a myriad of options. He had a few basic materials at his disposal, remnants of his previous life and the knowledge he had accumulated from his past experiences in the game. Sunan began experimenting, combining herbs and minerals he had gathered. Each successful synthesis filled him with a sense of accomplishment, inching him closer to his goal of becoming a wizard. Days turned into weeks, and Sunan’s skills improved rapidly. He crafted potions, improved his understanding of magical theories, and honed his mental abilities through intense meditation practices. The Star Ring Meditation, one of the first techniques he mastered, allowed him to tap into the latent mental energy within himself, enhancing his cognitive functions and magical sensitivity. As he progressed, whispers of his endeavors began to circulate among the remaining noble families and the common folk. Some viewed him with suspicion, while others saw potential in the young man who dared to challenge the status quo. Sunan knew he needed allies. He began seeking out individuals who shared his vision—a return to the age of wizards. He discreetly approached the remnants of the nobility, the few who still held some influence, and began to forge connections. His reputation grew cautiously, and with it, the opportunities to gather resources and knowledge. He learned of hidden libraries, ancient texts, and artifacts that could aid in his quest. One fateful day, while exploring a forgotten ruin, he uncovered an ancient tome detailing the rituals of the wizards who had once thrived on this land. The pages contained knowledge that could accelerate his growth, including spells long lost to time. “This is it,” Sunan thought as he carefully transcribed the contents into his own notes. “With this, I can not only learn the spells but also improve my synthesis techniques.” As he delved deeper into the arcane arts, he realized that the key to his ascension lay not just in personal power but in understanding the intricate web of alliances and rivalries that defined noble society. He had to navigate these treacherous waters carefully. In the back of his mind, Sunan always remembered the impending return of the wizards. The time was coming when he would have to reveal his true potential and lead the charge into the new era. With each passing day, he grew stronger, more confident, and increasingly aware of the responsibilities that awaited him. The world was changing, and Sunan was determined to be at the forefront of that change—a wizard in a world that had forgotten what it meant to wield true power.
