Sebuah anomali terjadi pada matahari yang menyebabkan sinarnya berdampak mematikan pada populasi manusia. Setiap cahaya matahari, termasuk yang terpantul oleh bulan, akan merubah makhluk hidup menjadi makhluk yang mematikan. Terkena cahaya matahari langsung akan melelehkan tubuh makhluk dan merubah mereka menjadi tumpukan daging hidup dalam beberapa detik, makhluk ini juga dapat menyatu satu sama lain sehingga menyebabkan peningkatan ukuran tubuh mereka. Setiap makhluk hidup yang terkena efek SCP-001 dapat dinyatakan mati. Diperkirakan sekitar 95% populasi manusia telah berubah menjadi makhluk itu.
