Chapter 1
The shouts of countless individuals wielding swords and the fruits of their labor resonated throughout the expansive field. Meanwhile, a young man, injured and nearly lifeless in a corner, suddenly opened his eyes.
"Where am I? Am I still alive?" he asked, gazing around. Just moments ago, he had been hit by a car while attempting to save a girl, and he had lost track of everything that followed, though he vaguely recalled some words he had heard in the darkness.
"What did that voice say? Yes, it mentioned sending me to another world. Is this what it meant?" he pondered aloud as he attempted to rise but was met with excruciating pain coursing through his body.
"Ouch! Why does everything hurt so badly?" he groaned, collapsing back to the ground. Inspecting his injured hand, he noticed a long gash that resembled a sword wound, which appeared to be several days old.
"How did I get this scar? Was it from training here?" he wondered, rubbing the wound. Other areas of his body ached as well, but with so many people around, he couldn't remove his clothes for a proper examination. Trying to stand once more, he relied on his seemingly uninjured right hand.
However, as he rose, a sudden, intense headache struck, causing him to sit back down with a thud, catching the attention of others practicing swordsmanship nearby.
"Ah, it's Lucian. Looks like Adam really roughed him up in that duel. Poor guy can hardly stand."
"But he brought it on himself, didn't he? Adam is a level 3 swordsman; what was this rookie thinking, trying to win over his girl?"
The onlookers started to ridicule Lucian upon seeing his condition, and while their criticisms seemed somewhat warranted, Lucian's resurfacing memories suggested otherwise.
He sat in contemplation as memories flooded back. Without them, his existence would likely be even bleaker; he wouldn't recognize anyone or know if he had a home.
"So, my name is Lucian, and I'm a novice swordsman." The recollections of his former self diminished the sensation of being in a new body. Although he would take time to acclimatize to this new form, these memories provided clarity about the world his predecessor inhabited and what he needed to pursue to align with his own beliefs.
"Are you alright, Lucian?"
Lost in thought, he heard a gentle voice and looked up to see a man of similar age offering his hand to help him.
Lucian observed the individual before him for a moment. The person had long black hair and piercing black eyes, making him a bit uncertain whether he was looking at a man or a woman. However, the memories from his predecessor provided clarity and support.
"Yes, I'm okay. Thanks for your help, Callum," Lucian said as he took Callum's hand and stood up, trying to dismiss the residual pain in his body.
"You really should have taken a day or two to rest. Didn't you remember what Adam did to you yesterday?" Callum asked, concern evident in his gaze, as he genuinely worried about Lucian, the only one who treated him normally.
Recalling everything he had learned about Callum from his predecessor's memories, Lucian looked at him and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "It wasn't my fault, but since Adam is our superior, we can't easily disregard his orders, whether it's you, me, or anyone else."
"Is that right? So you were flirting with his wife—was that just a rumor? You really are brave, my wild friend," Callum replied with a smile.
"Seriously? So now you doubt me? You don't trust your friends that much?" Lucian asked, meeting Callum's gaze, though he recognized his friend's playful teasing.
"Alright, alright, I apologize. I was just joking."
With that, they shared a laugh as they left the training field. "Where are we headed, anyway?" Lucian asked, noticing that Callum was leading him away from home.
"Nowhere special, just come with me, and you'll see when we arrive," Callum replied with a grin, which hinted at his reluctance to disclose their destination.
Since Lucian couldn't recall anything suspicious about Callum from his memories, he merely shook his head and continued walking, leaning on Callum's shoulder for support. They had been friends for years, so the likelihood of Callum leading him astray was very slim.
After walking for a few minutes, they reached a small store, and Lucian realized where Callum had been taking him. However, he was still puzzled by Callum's secrecy regarding their destination.
His curiosity was soon addressed.
"Alright, we've arrived at the apothecary. I know you haven't taken any medication, hoping your pain would just fade away, which is why I brought you here," Callum said, holding Lucian's hand and gesturing toward the shop.
Having trained and spent years with Lucian, Callum was well aware of his friend's frugal tendencies. After witnessing Lucian lose consciousness earlier and then wake up shortly after, he knew Lucian hadn't gone to the apothecary out of concern for his finances after the severe blows he sustained from Adam during training.
But how could he, as a good friend, allow that to happen?
"I know money is tight for you, but you need proper treatment. Do you think they'll let a weakened soldier like you join the battalion for the official hunt in three days?" Callum said, trying not to be too harsh but understanding that he had to confront Lucian's stingy nature directly.
