Chapter 1Prologue

(This part is world history in short)

Two thousand years ago, the world was at peace, in a very fragile manner. There were humans, demons, elves, and vampires, all existing yet each race was very much segregated from the others.

Humans formed their kingdoms by becoming subjects of ambitious kings who were always clashing for the dominance of terrain. The elves build long-lived abodes, hold lives deep in the primeval woods that are entwined by the magic and rhythmic cadence of the place. Demons, with a horrid appearance and sinister faculties to terrorize, without any doubts belong to shroud areas avoided at length by every being.

Then there were the vampires—sovereigns of the night. Unique in their culture, the immortals were so strong, fast, and ruled by that unquenchable thirst for blood. Yet, despite such a primal need, they did not turn into beasts.

Powerful queens led the vampires, and the matriarchal society they built—a thing of fear and wonder. Their queens governed from well-concealed, menacing fortresses and made certain their kin would stand as one, and their will, unopposed. Over the centuries, this strict code of conduct and solid hierarchical system preserved the stableness and secrecy of their world.

Of all these queens, none was more honored than Lilith. Her unparalleled wisdom, strength, and leadership had set her apart. She ruled with a firm hand but with a deep, abiding love for her people. Under her reign, the vampires thrived, hidden from the world yet ever prepared to defend their existence if need be.

But peace was never meant to last. Deep in the dark realms, the demons stirred, growing restless.

They were a chaotic race, driven by a primal urge to conquer and destroy. For years, they watched the world from the shadows, biding their time until they could strike at the perfect moment. Their disunity had kept them in check, various demon lords each pursuing his own ambitions. That all changed with the rise of a powerful new lord, Malakar.

Malakar was different from any demon before, cunning and ruthless, with a great vision for a world subjugated by his demonic kind. He knew this would mean purging his world of the two most major threats to his kind—the elves and the vampires. The former were powerful, reclusive, and anciently magic; the latter were nowhere and everywhere, hidden yet unpredictably and dangerously strong. All the same, Malakar was undeterred. He devised a plan to strike at the heart of vampire society and bring them to their knees.

His first move was subtle, sending spies and assassins amongst the vampires to spread rumors and lies, stir up strife, and instill fear. Fractures spread deep in what was once ranks united, and as the chaos deepened, he prepared his forces for his final assault against the great vampire citadels.

But he knew that would be difficult to do: the vampires were not to be trifled with, and their citadels were well manned and defended. What Malakar needed was an ace, and he found it in the form of a weapon: some kind of ancient, dark magic long lost in time that could destroy the very essence of a vampire, making them truly dead.

The new power seemed to have started an attack with Malakar. Demons invaded the heart of vampire territory in the middle of the night. The attack was swift and brutal, well out of expectation by the vampires. They fought valiantly, but the demons had the advantage. One by one, vampires fell as the demons unleashed their dark magic.

Queen Lilith herself took to the battlefield, determined to fight for her people. Hers was a battle fought bravely and skillfully—all that made her a legacy—but not even she seemed invincible.

It had been in the chaos of struggle that she faced Malakar, one of those fierce, jolting duels within the clash of titanic power. In the end, he overpowered her. Then he used the dark magic, hitting her with such a terrible blow that she died as no vampire had ever died in history.

But Lilith, even in death, would not be defeated so easily. With her dying breath, she unleashed a powerful curse, her voice echoing across the battlefield, full of sorrow and rage.

"From this day forward, no vampire shall live beyond two hundred years. Our immortality is shattered, and our time is numbered.

You may take my life, but my people will endure, and they will avenge me. This curse is my gift to you, Malakar—a reminder that even in death, I will not be forgotten. This curse will perish when Malakar dies."

The curse coursed through the ranks of vampires like wildfire, fastening itself into their very essence. The vampires, who had once believed themselves immortal, now felt the weight of mortality settle upon them.

For the first time in their long history, they knew fear—not of their enemies, but of time itself. Lilith's curse ensured that no vampire would live beyond two hundred years. Their lives, once endless, were now as fleeting as those of mortals.

Lilith's death sent shockwaves through the vampire world, plunging it into chaos. Feeling the vampires were now broken, Malakar confidently turned his attention to the elves, believing his victory was imminent. But he had underestimated the resilience of the vampire race.

Upon the queen's death, her daughter Seraphina came into power. Young, yet she vowed to avenge her mother and protect her people. Seraphina was not just a warrior; she was a strategist.

She knew well that the vampires alone could not face the demons. They needed allies—powerful ones. And so, Seraphina did what no vampire queen had ever done: she reached out to the human kings, offering an alliance.

The human world was in disarray: the kings ruled over fractured, divided kingdoms, and their constant wars and rivalries had left them weak. Demonic forces were already encroaching on human lands, spreading fear and chaos. When Seraphina's emissaries arrived at their courts, the human rulers were desperate.

Centuries had passed, during and within which vampires had been greatly feared and hunted down—almost the stuff of fantasies and nightmares—yet are offering strength and knowledge against one common enemy in return for this alliance. This is thus an offer that kings hardly can refuse.

Still and forever above, the forming of it was not an easy manner. The human kings remained proud, suspicious, and skeptical more often than not about such unscrupulous motives promoted directly by the vampires.

Beyond anything else, they generally believed this alliance would subordinate them once the demons defeated. But Seraphina bargained well. She hanged upon their fears of being captured by the demons and having very fearful afterlives awaiting—if they were to attack every other creature alone. She also yielded: she said that she would share all the knowledge and means of the vampire so that the alliance would not be unequal.

In the end, the alliance was forged. Born of necessity, it would turn out to be one of the most powerful forces the world had ever seen.

The war against the demons was brutal; side by side, humans and vampires fought together, against a common foe. Vampires that had lived most of their time in the background now openly fought alongside humanity; their speed and strength were fearsome opponents on the field of battle. Human soldiers brought their ingenuity in strategy and holy magic, while the vampires used their supernatural abilities devastatingly.

The battles were fierce, sometimes with entire cities reduced to rubble. But the alliance held strong. Seraphina led her vampire warriors wonderfully, while the human kings with their armies stood firm to a man.

Events change in the Battle of Bloodmoon Pass, where the final decision occurred; the demons gathered together in huge quantity for a final, critical strike. If the alliance would fall, both the human and vampire races would be doomed in any case. But then Seraphina and kings managed to devise a plan—using an advantageous pass terrain. The oncoming battle was fierce with thousands of lives lost; finally, Seraphina faced Malakar.

This time, she was ready and, weakening him with her mixture of vampire magic and human weaponry, she cut him down in a final blow. So they thought. Instead, so it was believed was Malakar trapped inside the dark realms, and not destroyed.

The curse remained.

The years following the war slowly saw the world rebuild itself. The Vampire-Human Alliance had saved both races but also created a new world order. Vampires were no longer in hiding; they were acknowledged as coequals. Humans and vampires together rebuilt the kingdoms that had been destroyed.

The society of the vampires changed themselves. What once was a sign of nobility amongst the vampire people—the enslaving of humans—was all but abandoned. It remained reserved for the queens and their direct descendants, though seldom used. Vampires no longer viewed humans as prey, but rather as partners.

Yet, Lilith's curse was one that hovered over their heads. No vampire could escape it, and with each approaching two hundredth year, death loomed near. A reminder of one's mortality, a reminder to make the most of a life that was now short.

And so the alliance lasted for two thousand years. Thirteen vampire queens came and went, all named Lilith in honor of the first. Each ruled with the wisdom and strength that had become the hallmark of vampire leadership. The world changed, but the memory of Queen Lilith—and her curse—was never forgotten.
