Prologue

In an alleyway there walked a small girl. She was 15 with long black hair to her hips, cut short to cover her forehead. She needed a trim soon, it was almost touching her eyelashes instead of her eyebrows and she kept having to brush the hair out of the way as she walked. She had a twin brother, and even as they grew up and their personalities grew, they still looked so much alike.

Jareth followed her close behind. She could sense him there, she could sense a lot of things, but she was untrained and she doubted herself. Her senses with these things were all over the place. She couldn’t tell what kind of creature he was, and she kept glancing around looking for him, but she couldn’t tell how close he really was. Part of Jareth wished she would see him, but he knew it was best for everyone, including her, if she didn’t see him.

Jareth slipped into the alley, listening for her protector, he knew Malakhi wasn’t there. Jareth’s brother had protected the twin girl and her brother for so long but he hadn’t noticed the changes that had come over his charge. She was home every weekend but Malakhi hadn’t seen any of the signs. Jareth did. He watched from an outside perspective and he had been able to see the change.

He was getting sidetracked. She was turning a corner and through the next alley and down the street about a hundred feet to her dorm. She shouldn’t have gone out alone, but she wasn’t herself. The person who had taken her body knew she wasn’t personally in any danger so she didn’t care if the girl was, even if the girl was her own daughter.

Jareth jumped and slammed into the small girl, easily pushing her to the wall. He grabbed her wrists as she struggled, a screech erupting from his throat as blisters rose on his palms. There was no scent, but he could feel the lotion.

Jareth bared his fangs and finally let go as the blisters started to spread to his wrists. Malakhi had given her a lotion with Jareth’s allergen, well, an allergen for all vampire’s. His brother had protected the girl from him, but sadly he hadn’t protected her from everything.

As he stepped back, she spun and her small palm hit his chest, sending him into the brick wall, causing it to crumble on top of him. He groaned and slowly got up only to be slammed against the remaining wall.

The girl started to sprint. He couldn't let her get to the main street, out in the open. He leapt up and hit the far wall, running across it and tackling her again. She fought and tried to turn over. If she did he would be thrown off again.

When she didn't stop, the vampire punched her, breaking her spine. She cried out, but not in pain. It was in sure fury. He rolled her over to see flat, red eyes.

"You'll kill your own daughter just to stop me?" Lilith said through the girls voice.

"Yes. Let me speak to her." He said, spewing pure hatred.

"I don't think so." She said, laughing. The vampire shook his head, taking a bag out of his pack. She started to choke blood as he threw sparkling powder over her face.

He saw the girl slowly come back, spreading into her eyes. A pretty green to replace the red from the evil that lay inside.

“Daddy?” She said, tears welling in her eyes.

“You recognised me.” He said with a small, sad smile.

“I won’t do it anymore. I didn’t kill those people and I won’t hurt anyone else. It’s too much. I won’t do it.” She exclaimed loudly.

“I know, I know. It was your mother. I’m sorry.” He wanted to continue but she cut him off.

“Am I dying?” She whispered.

“Yes. I’m even more sorry.” He said, and he meant it.

“It hurts.”

“It shouldn’t.” He said, confused, “The concoction I just sprayed on you shouldn’t have brought you back fully.”

“No, Dad. Your grief hurts.” She said, tearful.

“Would you let me make you like me?” He asked.

“When turned, your greatest trait is heightened. I would go mad. I would feel everyone all the time.” She said it like a joke, but it fell flat between them.

“Goodbye, Amber.” He said.

“Goodbye, Dad. Leave Mark alone.” She commanded.

“I will.”He promised. He cupped her cheeks and wiped away her tears before throwing more powder on her to knock her out as she passed away.

A scream shattered the night as Jareth turned around to see Amber’s twin Mark in the opening of the alleyway. He threw his arm out and the air around him started to take a black tint. Jareth stood, holding Amber's body close to his chest.

"Drop her!" Mark shouted, as he started to push the dark air in around Jareth. Jareth tried to speak but the air around him was pressing in on him. He just wanted to explain himself to Mark, but he couldn't bring air into his lungs, Mark was pushing it out, squashing him. He slowly put Amber down. Suffocating wouldn't kill him, He didn't have to breath. Mark's powers were doing more than that though. He wasn't very good at magic yet, but he was strong, because he was angry.

Jareth knew he would pass out if he let Mark continue, his powers were something different, something deadly. If he passed out, Mark would do something else, something worse.

Jareth jumped as hard and high as he could, landing on his palm and vaulting onto it. He rolled over, running as soon as his feet hit the ground. He leapt from building to building, hearing his son chanting quietly over his sister's dead face. Jareth knew what he was doing, and he knew he should stop it, but like a coward, he ran. He pulled out his phone and texted his brother. Malakhi answered as soon as he recieved the text. JAreth looked up as he ran, seeing grey, sandy smoke, flying in a spiral tube in the other direction. JAreth looked at the text.

"I'll contain it, you run." It read. His steps stuttered and he almost fell, something he hadn't done as a vampire just yet
