Two hours had passed since the ceremony was supposed to start, and Nolan was still nowhere to be found. Vanya's anxiety had turned to embarrassment, and her embarrassment had turned to anger.
Where was he? Why had he stood her up on their wedding day?
Just as Vanya was about to lose her temper, one of Nolan's staff members arrived with a letter and a marriage certificate.
"I'm so sorry, Miss Vanya," the staff member said, his eyes apologetic. "Mr. Nolan has instructed me to deliver this letter and certificate to you."
Vanya's eyes widened as she read the letter. Nolan had written that he didn't want to go through with the facade of a wedding ceremony, and that he had signed the marriage certificate. He instructed Vanya to sign her part and complete the formality.
Vanya's face burned with anger and humiliation. How could he do this to her? How could he stand her up on their wedding day and then expect her to just sign the certificate and pretend everything was fine?
But Vanya was not one to back down from a challenge. Despite the embarrassment and humiliation, she stood up straight, took a deep breath, and walked out of the dressing room.
She walked alone down the aisle, her head held high, and her eyes flashing with anger. She stood at the altar, looked out at the sea of faces, and began to speak.
"I, Vanya, take thee, Nolan, to be my wedded husband," she said, her voice clear and strong. "To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part."
As she spoke, Vanya felt a sense of determination wash over her. She would not let Nolan's behavior define her. She would not let him humiliate her. She would rise above it, and she would come out on top.
When she finished speaking, Vanya raised her glass in a toast. "To my husband, Nolan," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "May he find happiness in his absence."
The guests looked on in shock and embarrassment, but Vanya didn't care. She had made her point, and she had maintained her dignity.
As the ceremony came to a close, Vanya walked around the room, greeting the guests and pretending to be happy. But inside, she was seething with anger and humiliation.
She couldn't wait to get out of there and start her new life. She couldn't wait to leave that arrogant Nolan and his family behind... but for now, she needed him.
As the night fell, Vanya followed her new family home, still trying to process the events of the day. She had never felt so humiliated and embarrassed in her life. Nolan's absence from the wedding ceremony had been a slap in the face, and she couldn't help but wonder what she had done to deserve such treatment.
As they arrived at the Carter estate, Vanya was greeted by an assistant who was standing in the foyer, apologizing profusely.
"I'm so sorry, Mrs. Carter," the assistant said, bowing his head. "Mr. Nolan had an important deal to sign and couldn't make it back in time for dinner."
Christopher, Nolan's father, frowned, but didn't say anything. Vanya, on the other hand, felt a surge of anger. Who did Nolan think he was, standing her up on their wedding night and then not even bothering to show up for dinner?
The assistant, sensing the tension, quickly ushered Vanya and the rest of the family towards the dining room. But Vanya was not interested in eating. She was tired, humiliated, and angry, and all she wanted to do was go to bed.
As the dinner came to a close, the maids came to escort Vanya to her new room. But when they led her to Nolan's room, Vanya's heart sank. She did not want to stay in the same room as Nolan, not after the way he had treated her.
"I don't want to stay here," Vanya said, turning to the maid. "Can I have a different room, please?"
The maid looked taken aback, but quickly nodded. "Of course, Mrs. Carter. Let me show you to a different room."
As the maid led Vanya to a different room, Vanya couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. She was finally alone, and she could finally process the events of the day.
But as she looked around the room, Vanya realized that she was not alone. There was a note on the bedside table, addressed to her.
"Welcome to the family," the note read. "I hope you're enjoying your new life as Mrs. Carter while you can... I'll see you soon."
Vanya's heart sank as she read the note. It was from Nolan, and it was clear that he was not going to make things easy for her.
