Score: 8.5/10 Critical Review: A Book That Ruins Other Books Yup, you read that right. This book has single-handedly ruined about 10 novels for me in the last month. I’ll be reading a book that initially showed promise, but then—almost subconsciously—I start comparing it to My Scumbag System. Thoughts like, “I wish the character development was better,” or “I wish the writing quality was more immersive,” start creeping in. I know WebNovel is a platform for amateur writers to hone their craft, which by definition means their writing skills and imagination are still rough around the edges. But it’s hard not to compare when such a high-quality book exists on the same platform. I won’t lie: when I first saw the title and synopsis, I assumed it was just another low-effort, smut-filled story, the kind you can find by the dozen on the app. But seeing it highlighted on my feed, I decided to give it a try—and here I am, writing this glowing review. One of the book’s greatest strengths is that it knows its target audience. From the very first chapter, we’re introduced to Satori, our protagonist. He isn’t the typical confused, childish, dim-witted, hypochondriac anime MC who has a life crisis every time something unexpected happens. Personally, I’m so tired of the overused transmigration trope that I usually skip the first 2–4 chapters of any new book because it’s the same act performed a million times. Yes, the first chapter contains similar fluff, but it ends quickly. By the second chapter, we already know Satori’s limitations and goals, and we see him as clever, confident, and intelligent. I’ve always been a fan of manipulative MCs, and Satori delivers exactly that. He doesn’t have a hero complex, nor does he start with overpowered abilities. Instead, he’s simply resourceful with the situation he’s given. He begins life as an overweight loser, and his goal is to seduce Natalia—a girl whose main principles are hard work and dedication. So what does he do? He spends the next month mostly ignoring her, focusing on improving himself. Through his determination, Natalia ends up approaching him first. Only then does he know it’s time to initiate the “seduction phase.” At the same time, while things are still fresh, the author carefully develops Natalia as a character. She isn’t just another cookie-cutter female lead template—you can feel she’s written as a real person. By the end of chapter 50, almost every member of the family (except Luka) feels fleshed out and believable. This deserves praise because character development, while keeping a story engaging, is notoriously difficult. Another standout feature is the pacing. The story unfolds slowly—some might even say at a glacial pace. But the writing is so good that it never feels stagnant. Every chapter feels like it’s either building toward something or is simply entertaining in its own right. The dialogue shines especially bright. It not only reveals each character’s personality but also subtly builds the world. The author avoids meaningless info dumps about the setting or its policies (which most readers forget anyway). Instead, the world expands naturally, chapter by chapter. The same goes for character introductions: instead of flooding the reader with 10 characters in 5 chapters, the story takes its time so that each introduction matters and sticks. That said, there are a few areas that could have been handled better. The initial seduction between Satori and Natalia, for instance, felt like it skipped a few steps. But honestly, I didn’t find myself complaining for long. The author kept developing their relationship after they got together, which made up for the rushed beginning. Overall, this book has earned my seal of approval. I hope it receives the recognition it deserves from others in the community.
