Chapter 97 - So, You've Seen It All!
"So, Grayfia, are you here to question me?"
Rias snorted, clearly annoyed as she faced Grayfia's attitude.
"I wouldn't dare, Rias; that's too serious," Grayfia responded calmly, keeping her tone even. Though she seemed a bit respectful, she didn't back down.
"Then what do you mean?" Rias asked, her suspicion clear.
"I just want to remind you to be mindful of your status and not do anything that would embarrass the Gremory Clan," Grayfia sighed. "But it looks like I'm too late. If Lord Sirzechs and your parents find out what happened tonight, they'll be pissed."
"I'm just doing what I want. There's nothing wrong with giving myself to someone I love," Rias shot back, clearly irritated.
"I'm not denying your feelings, Rias, but as the heir of the Gremory Clan, even if you want to give yourself to someone, it shouldn't be to a human," Grayfia said, glancing at Mahiro. "An ordinary human isn't worth it."
"Not to mention, you carry more than just the Gremory name. What happened tonight was anything but noble."
"Grayfia, you're full of yourself! A maid has no right to question me or the person I love!" Rias snapped, her anger flaring as she glared at Grayfia.
Grayfia stayed calm, her eyes locked on Rias's. "No, as the next head of the Gremory Clan, I wouldn't dare question your decisions."
"Then what are you doing now?" Rias laughed sarcastically.
"What... what's going on between you two? It seems like you're arguing," Asia asked weakly, sensing the tension. "Isn't there something wrong with Rias? Why does it seem like...?"
The tension between Rias and Grayfia was thick, and even Asia could tell something was up. The conversation left her feeling confused.
"It's okay, Asia. You don't need to worry," Mahiro smiled, trying to reassure her.
"It's my fault for losing my cool. Sorry, Asia, for letting you see this mess," Rias said, trying to regain control of her emotions.
"Oh, it's okay, it's okay. I'm just a little curious," Asia quickly waved her hands. "If something's important, just talk it out calmly. When I was in the church, the priests always said that anger doesn't solve problems; only calm does."
Grayfia sighed, bowed slightly to Rias, and said, "I'm sorry, Rias, for being too forward."
Despite their short time together, Grayfia had a good impression of Asia. As an experienced Devil, Grayfia could easily see that Asia had a pure and kind heart. Maybe that's why Rias became friends with this nun.
But her usual composure had slipped after learning what happened between Rias and Mahiro, which is why she had spoken so harshly.
"Forget it," Rias said reluctantly, waving her hand. Grayfia had shown some humility, and Rias didn't want to push it. Besides, Grayfia wasn't just any maid; she held a significant role in the Gremory Clan, and Rias knew she couldn't treat her too harshly.
"Asia, go back to your room for now," Mahiro said. "Rias and Grayfia have some things to sort out."
"Okay," Asia replied, a bit startled but understanding. She nodded and left the room.
After Asia left, Rias continued, "So, you've seen it all. Why don't you leave, Grayfia?"
"Ah, I didn't expect that you, Rias, would go this far just to resist the engagement," Grayfia sighed.
"Is there a problem? I'm just doing what I want. I'll handle the responsibilities my family has given me, but I'm not okay with my marriage being treated like some bullshit business deal," Rias snapped, her tone sharp.
"However, your marriage is also part of your responsibility as a member of the Gremory Clan," Grayfia retorted lightly.
"If I can't even have that freedom, I'd rather give up my status as the heir," Rias said firmly.
Grayfia stared at Rias, her tone growing serious. "Are you serious, Rias?"
"What do you think?" Rias didn't back down, meeting Grayfia's gaze.
After a tense moment, Grayfia finally looked away. She knew how determined Rias was and realized she couldn't change her mind. Besides, what was done, was done.
Grayfia sighed and said, "Arguing won't help either of us."
She nodded slightly, regaining her composure. "Congrats, Rias. Your actions tonight have indeed broken the engagement that was tying you down."
"I think that even if the Phenex Clan still wanted to marry into the Gremory Clan, they'd think twice after hearing about what happened tonight."
"But as an advisor, I have to tell you, Rias, you acted impulsively."
Grayfia looked at Rias sternly, no longer speaking as a maid, but as an elder offering advice.
"Do you understand how much nonsense your impulsiveness could stir up?"
"Grayfia..."
Grayfia's sudden change in tone left Rias momentarily speechless. She had gone to Mahiro driven by impulse, without thinking much about the consequences, only wanting to quickly deal with the marriage contract that was binding her.
But under Grayfia's reminder, Rias started to feel uneasy.
"It's okay, Rias," Mahiro said, patting her shoulder to calm her down. Then, he turned to Grayfia. "If there's trouble, why not deal with it together?"
