He raised an eyebrow, his skepticism evident. "You don't have a child?"

She nodded silently, her nerves betraying her as she shifted under his gaze. Just as she feared he might see through her facade, he looked away, causing her courage to falter.

Turning his back to her, he let out a quiet sigh before facing her again. "I suppose my friend was mistaken about dropping the locket here," she fabricated, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

"I see. Your friend loses a necklace and you go searching for it like her dog," he replied, his tone lightening slightly as he chuckled.
