He pushes the raft into the sea and stays on it, keeping his distance from the tiger on the boat—

But he is not a qualified animal trainer, and his plan to tame the tiger concludes with Parker marking his face with a spray of yellow urine.

Pi knows that the tiger can swim.

When the tiger is desperately hungry, it will surely swim over to eat him, so he has no choice but to try and catch fish from the sea to feed the tiger.

When it rains, he collects rainwater for drinking and shares it with the tiger.
