"I came back early and was supposed to surprise you," she said, blushing. "Lex told me where to find you and I overheard you telling a client how you didn't really have feelings for me."
I felt my heart drop at her words.
How many times had I told clients that it was an arranged relationship between us in my foolish attempt to protect her?
Not a lot of them knew who she was, but those that did I lied to.
"Lili, you have to believe me," I told her desperately as I felt her unraveling at the memory of my harsh words. "Those were lies, they were foolish lies a young man said in the belief that it would protect you."
"Protect me?" she asked. "How would you saying you didn't love me protect me?"
Her voice broke as tears fell from her eyes.
She had been clearly holding back all of these emotions.
I pulled her close and held her to me.
