Chapter 18: Answering a Call

*Brynn*

Brynn could sense that he was coming long before she picked up his near-silent footsteps out in the tunnel. Already, she had blown out most of the candles to craft an inconspicuous, flickering darkness to suit her needs.

The stone wall of the chamber was not a sheer, smooth surface. Instead, it occasionally dipped back and swelled forward to create uneven alcoves along the perimeter. Brynn, clutching an unlit torch like a club, tucked herself into an alcove next to the blocked crevice and disappeared into the shadows.

She willed herself into silent stillness.

Stone slid against stone to her right as William moved the chunk of rock.

A sliver of light poured in from the crevice and then was punctuated by shadow as William slipped into the chamber.

A warmth bloomed in Brynn’s belly, but she ignored it. She tightened her grip on the torch and tensed her muscles, readying herself.
