Chapter 55

The gates of hell.

A gargantuan structure created by some of the strongest gods to ever exist, for the sole purpose of locking away the horrors of existence for eternity.

Of course nothing can be perfect.

In exchange for its longevity, the construction ended up being a lot weaker than it could have been.

There were a number of mistakes made while the gates were built. For example, the decision to make it everlasting instead of unbreakable.

There was no rational reason for it other than its creators hating each other's guts and not wanting to meet ever again.

Those who were not part of the construction didn't raise an issue because of another mistake. They naively believed that anything powerful enough to damage the completed gates would be reasonable enough not to do so.

There were some other minor problems, but these two contributed the most to a certain event.

The entrance that has been sealed shut since time immemorial was broken, its pieces scattered all over the underworld.

Nyx, sometimes referred to as the calmest of the gods, stormed hell so blinded by rage that she simply didn't bother with opening the door.

The outer region of hell was a simple place in spite of its purpose. A never-ending wasteland interrupted by the occasional tortured soul or otherworldly monstrosity. Lucky visitors might find a small town where the atmosphere was slightly less miserable.

For our purposes, the most important landmark of the wastes was a modest mansion decorated in dark purple and surrounded by the only spot of greenery in sight.

Nyx headed towards this mansion, a mixture of star-fire and primordial darkness marking her path.

She managed to calm down enough to not burst through the wall, but not enough to leave the door handle intact.

Inside, there was a woman in bathrobes lying down on an ordinary couch and looking at an oversized magical orb as one would at an old timey television. She could be mistaken to be a regular human if it wasn't for the pair of horns sticking out of her head. Her appearance reflected her reaction to the ruined entrance.

"I hope you have a great repairman 'cause I sure as hell don't."

The lady of the house, Lilith, was an interesting specimen of the divine. Although not really rare she did fall into the minority of people who were living in the underworld willingly. She was part of an even more select group, those who never had to die to get into hell. The intersection of these two groups contained only three people, the other two members of which were her immediate family.

Her status granted her certain privileges, the practical effects of which included remaining unfazed even with an enraged goddess shouting at her.

"I don't know what your big idea was but you better restrain yourself before I do something we'll both regret!"

"I don't see your problem. You would usually need to kill a lot of people for my blessing, yet I gave one to the rabbit boy free of charge. I'm doing both of you a favor if anything."

Nyx ripped the door off its hinges which miraculously held on so far.

"Your favor's going to get him killed. There's no way to stop those maniacs from going after him once things get out of control."

"Oh come on now, I'm sure they can be reasoned with."

"It's impossible! You should know that more than... any... one."

Lilith finally stood up. Although nothing actually changed about her appearance, the average person probably would have perceived her gradually becoming more and more demonic. Or from Nyx's perspective, normal.

"Looks like you finally get it. Just because I lost my champion doesn't mean I'm out of the game, especially when yours will probably do everything I want even without my interference. I'm just speeding up the process.

Obviously it would be better if poor Isaac was still alive, but it's not like he won't see the end of the game."

"Fine, you made your point. I'll let you off for now. But if anything happens because of your stupid blessing you will have to explain yourself with your silver tongue in my hand!"

After making one final threat Nyx turned around and left. Though not before hearing a taunt from the voice she only recently took displeasure to.

"Even if everything goes wrong, there won't be any reason to be troubled. What does a few more millennia of waiting matter?"

With her patience rapidly running out, the queen of the night skies left the underworld. Soon after she did so, pieces of rubble from all over hell began to float and followed her example. However, unlike the goddess they stopped right at the edge.

The indistinct pieces of broken stone and bent metal began to take the shape of a pair doors fit for giants. Eventually, the gates of hell have been restored to their true glory.

Even if the heavenly materials of the entrance are to be broken, eternity isn't so easy to end.

To avoid any confusion, hell and the underworld are interchangable.
