Chapter 60

Chen looked at Korra's neck, and he shook his head. He turned to his foe.

He looked at Zaheer and thought. 'I hope this one doesn't have a plot armour.'

It was just a feeling he'd gotten used to after his experience with Amon and Unalaq.

They had taught him that the third is the charm.

But this case should be different. The lavabender definitely was dead as Chen had unleashed very strong lightning that can kill an elephant.

Zaheer was clenching his teeth as he landed on another building.

He was in a bad situation. He'd just lost two from his exceptional benders group, and he was against Korra and Chen, who both could use the Avatar State. Chen was a pseudo-one, but it doesn't change the fact he's so strong in that state.

"So…" Korra said. "These the guys prince Zuko came to warn me from… the Order of the Red Lotus." She glared at Zaheer."

"Don't let your guard down," Chen muttered. "There is a huge bitch hiding somewhere with the power to explode you from afar."

"So, it's two against two," Korra said, smirking.

"I guess." Chen jogged in his place. The roof of the building he was at had been destroyed by the lava, so he had to take the battle somewhere else. At any rate, he couldn't care about the public damage, now that Korra was here to take responsibility as the Avatar.

"Korra, take a step to the left," Chen muttered when he noticed a heat signal moving somewhere.

Korra did as she was told, and compressed air passed by her as if it was a bullet.

*Boom*

A building that was in front of them exploded.

Chen didn't care, since he won't pay for that.

"Take care of her, I'll toy with Zaheer."

Chen smirked at the airbender, who closed his eyes.

Chen's eyes turned red as he entered his Avatar state. His Chi started draining, and a black flame started gathering around him. Bending it with his mind, it took the shape of two meters tall dragon. Purple fire lit up from its eyes.

"Alright." Korra jumped off the building, her eyes glowing in white colour, a wind tornado lifting her through the air.

"Leave your earthly attachment. Become one with the wind." Zaheer was muttering as the fire dragon headed toward him. The buildings started melting from their heat.

Zaheer took a step forward, and he closed his eyes, seeming not to care that he was going to die.

All of the sudden, Zaheer dodged, flying in the air and up, dodging the black flame.

'Tsk. Remind me of the guy who always picks up the lucky card on the first try.'

Zaheer flew in the air, and he glared down at Chen.

"Thanks to the sacrifice of my friend, I understood the wisdom behind the airbenders monks." Said Zaheer.

"So, you too can learn things from the brain farts of these baldies," Chen said. The black dragon shifted its direction in the air and went back near Chen, who extended his hand to the side. The Shadow flame appeared, taking the shape of a dragon with blue fire eyes.

Now he'd two. One is cold, and the other is hot.

Stretching his hands, Chen smirked at Zaheer.

As he waved them, the two black fire dragons headed toward Zaheer, who started flying in the air like a Flying Bison.

Zaheer started dancing with the dragons. One time, he would sweat, and the other he would shiver from coldness.

*Boom* *Boom*

Loud explosions occurred behind him. But Chen didn't flinch at all.

He was focusing on getting his prey done. Having already memorised the patterns the flying Zaheer was taking, Chen could predict his next move.

Lightning sparks danced around Chen's body, he vanished and appeared in the air. He looked like a lightning bolt as he appeared.

Zaheer, who was looking behind him and dodging the cold and hot fire, didn't know what was waiting for him.

As he lifted his head to see which route he should take to escape, he found Chen in front of him.

Before he could try to move, Chen extended his hand and held Zaheer by the shoulder. Zaheer looked shocked as lightning spread from Chen's hand. Chen held Zaheer's limb body and threw him to another building's roof, destroying it.

He would die from bleeding out anyway.

Chen then waved his hand, the two dragon's then headed to the sky.

Meanwhile, the explosions had stopped. A body was sent flying with the wind, and it wasn't Korra's.

All of the sudden, Chen's skin perked up. A chill ran through his back as his electrical sense.

"The Dragon's energy was coming from here." Said a deep masculine voice. "It was hard to find you, the mortal who can absorb the power of the spirits."

Although it was night, a strong light emitted above Chen, making it seem that they are in the day.

Slowly turning his head, Chen looked at a giant creature, spreading its wings, golden fire dancing on its body.

"You…" Chen felt something was missing here.

From the pressure he could feel, he assumed it was an ancient powerful spirit.

"The name is the phoenix spirit. I'm associated with the sun spirit, which provides your fire with power." The Phoenix spoke.

The people who had gotten out of their buildings because of the earlier fight now started running away.

Korra appeared next to Chen, and she whispered to him. "What have you done to piss off this one."

"What have I done?" why do you assume it's me," Chen muttered to Korra. "You're the bridge with spirits, find that out."

Korra, taking a deep breath, walked forward. "Why are you here? How did you even get here?" she then muttered, "the portals are closed anyway."

"So naive from you Avatar." Said the spirit. "There are locations that link the spirit world. Wang Shi Tong opened his library for the war against you.

"As for your question, what have you done, the pseudo-Avatar." It looked at Chen. "You have tabbed into a taboo and threatened the safety of the spirits. We, the ancient powerful spirits, haven't bothered with the little game of Raava and Vaatu. Now that you found a way to devour us, you have declared war. This must end before it spread."

So that's why they are angry.

It must be that ancient dragon who provoked the spirits to come here.

"I'm the bridge between humanity and spirits." Korra stepped forward and held Chen by his arm. "Pardon my dummy boyfriend. Isn't there a way for us to solve this conflict?"

Feeling offended, Chen turned to Korra and opened his eyes widely.

Did she just call him a dummy?

Look at who was talking.

"There is a way indeed." The phoenix said. "You two have to die. The Avatar had messed up the order, and we didn't mind you playing as the bridge in the past, for we never wanted to put effort into bothering humans, so we let you do that job for us. Now, you've passed your boundaries."

Chen remembered a detail. In the Last Airbender show, the library of Wang Shi Tong was a link between the spirit and material world. When he'd buried it under the desert, it went to the spirit world.

So, it seemed that the spirits came through it.

Also, they want war, because Chen had learnt how to absorb their power.

"And let me guess. That old dragon was the one to tell you that."

"Yes. Seeing that you have his energy, I'm certain," the phoenix said. "Now we know where you live, we have to kill everyone you know, or knew. We'll see through your memory, and I promise that we'll be just."

Chen felt a shiver on his skin. His red eyes got redder as a red aura wrapped him.

Did this guy just threaten to kill everyone Chen knew?

Chen had lost everything in his previous life. He'd barely wanted to get an attachment for the fear of losing it.

Now that he'd something, a family, this spirit was threatening to kill her.

He remembered Asami, and he couldn't help but feel pissed off as he looked at the gigantic spirit.

"Tell me," Chen growled as he looked at the spirit. "How much water will I need when I make chicken soup from you?"

The red aura around him got stronger, and his energy consumption increased.

"So amusing." The gigantic bird flew backwards, flapping its wings. From them, the golden flames descended, joining together and forming a beam.

"By coming here, spirits must give up their immortal form. Meaning, you're about to die."

Opening his mouth, Chen roared, unleashing his dragon breath. A compressed dark purple beam, which was enhanced thanks to his dragon energy, left his mouth and clashed against the golden flame.

*BOOM*

A large explosion occurred, and the pressure in the atmosphere rose. The impact made some buildings crumble and fall.

Korra appeared up, above that phoenix in her avatar state. A large group of rocks were behind her. They shrunk, or rather compressed, into a small size. They then split and attacked the phoenix, hitting it as if they were earth bullets, each weighing like a huge boulder.

The bird flapped its wings and dodged in the air as a howl left its mouth.

The damaged spots had holes in them, and blood gashing out.

Apparently, when spirits come to the mortal world, they lose their immortality. The rules of the material world would apply to them.

The phoenix turned to Korra. The fire spread from its wings and covered the spirit, healing the wounds in no time.

"It can regenerate." Korra's face had a question mark.

"It can't regenerate forever."

A ball of lightning appeared on Chen's hand as he vanished and appeared above it. He then stabbed his hand, piercing the spirit. Opening his eye widely, he channelled his negative energy through his hand, and he discharged the lightning inside of it. The spirit shook its body, sending Chen flying away.

"This energy…" the spirit muttered as the fire covered its wounds. "Did the sparrow teaches humans lightning? Unfortunately for you, that lightning is only likely to affect dark spirits."

"I don't give a fuck." Chen said. "I just want you dead."

Chen then opened his mouth, not caring how much energy he was putting into his attacks.

He didn't care if he would cause public damage or something.

Currently, he was fearing fear, and he didn't fear death.

He just didn't want to lose everything.

"So amusing." The spirit said. "If you are afraid of losing your beloved ones. I can assure you they will reincarnate. As a phoenix, I can confirm that. Don't feel bad for them. Just consider that they had lost their memories."

It seemed to want to provoke him.

Well, it succeeded.

Chen put almost all of his energy into his next attack. Opening its mouth, a large sea of black hellish fire left its mouth, covering the whole body of the phoenix.

The phoenix tried to dodge it. But his efforts were fruitless as it was covered in it.

Chen's red eyes turned blue again, and when the notification didn't play in his mind, he muttered. "You gotta be kidding me."

The sea of flames vanished, and the phoenix appeared covered in the black flames, which seemed to burn him.

"Oh very well. You said I gave up my immortality." The phoenix's voice echoed in the middle of the fire-covered pattern. "But I have to remind you. I'm an immortal by default, I can resurrect."

Chen panted a bit. Almost of his energy was gone, and he couldn't go into Avatar state again. All he needed was twenty minutes to get all of his energy back, so at least he could dodge.

The black flames disappeared as golden fire surrounded it. When all of the fire vanished, a smaller phoenix appeared.

"To fight you here and alone, with the Avatar with you, I would be in a disadvantageous position." It said. "For that, I'll warn you that I'm coming for you. As for these humans, they seem to know more about you. I'll take them."

"I won't allow you," Korra said, trying to attack the phoenix, which flapped its wing and moved at a high speed, holding Zaheer's limb body, before picking up on the rest of his gang and lifting them and flying away.

"Damn it!" Korra cursed.

"Leave him," Chen said. "Two of these guys are dead. What we should be careful of are spirits that want us dead."

"Chen, are you alright." Korra rushed toward Chen. She had water around her hand, and she put it on him to heal his body.

"I'm okay." He said. "What we should think of now, is what to tell the police." He then turned his head. Most of the part of the city was destroyed for good. "After that, we'll go to the desert."

"The desert?"

"He mentioned the library of Wang Shi Tong. Everyone knows that Aang met that owl in the desert between Ba Sing Se and Omashu." Chen clenched his teeth.
