Chapter 105 - Another day another failed assault

"Kane, sorry to interrupt your conversation with Monty, but why do you think we should send our best fighter as well as one of the few people that was quite high on Pike's team after Monty? Wouldn't have been better for Octavia and Bryan to go after him, or even me, rather than risking our best soldiers?"

"To be completely honest with all of you, I'm more or less expecting this to be a trap. We all know Monty and the only way he would lie to us would be if his mother is threatening him with something and if my fear is proven right, then Sergey and Bryan would have a good chance of making it out alive than anyone else. While I don't know how much Miller trained after Arkadia was built, Sergey went down south with Leon and for three months they fought and learn under the people that live there, as well as their not-so-orthodox ambushes that scared Azgeda."

"Then about us? If Pike is going to be there, I will not stand and watch him leave."

"No, Octavia, I don't plan to keep anyone from going there, but I hope that someone would remain here to hold the cave while we take Monty away from them."

"Good."

Meanwhile, back inside Mount Weather, the situation become worse than ever since no more than eighteen people alive and capable of using a gun were left to defend the tunnels from the increasing pressure the grounders put on them.

To be fair, if I didn't have this kind of body, I would have either died or collapsed from exhaustion by now. Moreover, if that wasn't bad enough, the silence was almost overpowering, as nothing and by that I mean absolutely nothing was being heard from in front of us.

It has been almost three days since I've slept more than two hours a day and it's started to show. I was already breathing heavily and my mouth was dry, but despite those, I did maintain my calm. There was no point panicking or running, since, in all honesty, I doubt we would make it out alive without an armored car transporting us. Sadly for us, Pike practically gave up on us, without even announcing us, then again, almost all of the people that survived and remained behind weren't even liking the old teacher, so it was kind of in his favor if all of us were to die in this shithole.

As I was thinking back at those things I heard the clump of boots on the ground making me turn around only to see Monroe slowly making her way toward me. Despite being injured and stubborn as a mule, she was undoubtedly one of the best shooters I have.

"You all right, Leon? You haven't slept at all yesterday and even today…maybe you should rest for an hour or so."

"I'm all right. How are you doing?"

"Not bad. I'm still having trouble walking for more than half an hour and sometimes my vision gets all blurry, but it's definitely getting better."

"You should have left with Raven and the others. It's not safe here anymore and it would be a pity to lose you in this damned place."

"C'mon Leon, just admit that you will miss me."

"Jesus Christ, give me a break."

Out of nowhere one of the guards shouted, making everyone alert as all of us aimed our guns at the tunnels only to see a grounder trying to walk away, seemingly unaware that he has been spotted by us. The same guard that saw him fired without aiming and the next second the grounder staggered stumbled and fell into a little pile of dead bodies. The guard put another bullet into the grounder to make sure that the poor man was dead.

"God damn fools. Are they getting dumber or are we getting better at killing them?"

We all were staring at him before a few of the survivors let out a chuckle. Thankfully, despite everything that had happened to us down here, the morale was as high as always. The same thing can't be said for the grounders as it was more of a forced assault than anything else, especially when they knew that on the other side of the corner stood a wall of guns and more than ten meters of open ground.

"Good work Ted taking out that scout. Now that they know we are here, they would storm us again. We're stuck in here, and we're going to stay here. I don't know about you guys, but I don't plan to become a prisoner or die under one of their rusty swords or arrows. Mike, I want you to go back to the surface and check out our machine guns. Then bring one of them down here, there's no point keeping more than one outside, especially with how many of us were left. We need more firepower set up facing the tunnel than what he has right now and hopefully, we have more than enough bullets to take out whatever the grounders throw at us."

"What about the main entrance?"

"There's nothing we can do up there anyways. If the grounders attack we won't be able to retreat or repel them anyways."

"Do we bolster the defenses as well? Should I take a team and bring more sandbags from inside?"

"You can do that Monroe. We can pile the sandbags in the front and pull out some planks to make a makeshift roof above our heads. Let's do it, people, they won't wait for us to finish."

Exactly one hour after the scout was killed, the first wave of the day appeared from around the corner. As the grounders walked uncertainly forward, confused as no one was killing them, we waited for a few seconds, hoping that the grounders would bite our bait.

Just as the last grounder walked out in the open, we opened fire. The sudden hammering roar of the guns was deafening. The grounders broke in all directions trying to save themselves, but inside a tunnel…, their leaders forced them to push forwards, while some of the less fortunate were left standing in confusion.

A minute later, there was no one left standing from the first wave—only a few lucky bastards that were in the back managed to hide and remained shivering on the ground, fearing for their lives. The leaders were down, looking more similar to a watering can than a human.

We didn't have to wait long for the next wave to attack, but somehow these ones looked troubled as if they were confused. Nevertheless, we continue to fire at them without mercy. Sadly, for the grounders, they had no place to hide or return. Strangely enough one of the grounders brought a horse down here, but as soon as he tried to charge his head dropped doll-like on his chest and he fell to the ground alongside his horse.

Another ten minutes later, the silence returned, hopefully for the rest of the day.
