In a big battle field behind a house, two elderly were sitting on a bench in corner looking amusedly at the kid who was battling on the training ground. There were also two pokemon standing beside them and looking curiously at the battle. One of the pokemon was around 5 feet in height and was a bipedal purple pokemon with a big purple horn on its head and you can also see a ridge of spine down its back. Other one was around 4'6" in height and was also bipedal but blue in color ,there was a small horn on its forehead, also a single spine on each of its big ears, and a line of spikes running down the length of its back could also be seen.

Trainer battling was around 9 years old and was commanding a small quadrupedal, rodent-like Pokémon. It was of pinkish purple color and It had large, spiny ears with teal insides, oversized front teeth, and red eyes. Its back was covered with three lines of large spines. The other pokemon was a bipedal, insectoid Pokémon. Its body was of green color and had a thin, cream-colored section between its head, thorax, and abdomen. There were three blunt horns extending from its forehead. Its arms was ending in large, white scythes. Also there were two pairs of cream-colored wings extend from its back.

"Nido, use Poison Sting while running towards Scyther and when you are 10 meters from Scyther then take left and again use Poison stings." Commanded Trainer.

As you already guessed, the trainer was Ethen Smith and this small cute pokemon was a new gift to Ethen from his grandparents on his 9th birthday, it was a male Nidoran which hatched just a day before Ethen reached home.

Its been 1 month so Ethen was able to train Nidoran and today he was teaching nidoran to attack while moving as a pokemon cannot attack easily while moving unless a move is at Elite Rank. It was also in case of Nidoran, he was practicing since last 5 days but still while using the move he has to stop to charge the move and then attack Scyther. Scyther here was only acting as moving training target whose work was to only dodge the attacks by Nidoran.

By the way, Scyther finally reached Early Elite Rank after a hard training from Scizor, Nidoking and Nidoqueen. Today morning he checked details about his pokemon which were as follows,

After training nidoran for more 2 hours, nidoran was tired so Ethen told Scyther to practice his egg move night slash which he was practicing since last 2 days and Ethen wanted him to make this move reach Intermediate Expertise level and if possible then Reversal to Intermediate level as well because he knows that if he wants to defeat Janina's Onix or Tommy's Geodude after going back to University then he will need his fighting move to be at atleast intermediate level as he was able to easily defeat their pokemon because they were only at Beginner level or Rookie Level, but he knew that it wasn't hard for Tommy's Geodude to reach Mid Intermediate level in two months training as it was already at Early Intermediate level and Janina's Onix will also be able to reach atleast Early Intermediate Level if not Mid.

Also he was preparing most because Max's Ralts was already 3 years old and close to Evolving, it was even possible that it will reach Mid Level directly if it got evolved, so Ethen cannot relax or slack off from training. That's why he was planning to learn Metal Claw if possible, but as Scyther never practiced any Steel element move so developing it soon was difficult without good practice, so in Scyther's training routine, practicing control of Steel Element in body was also added which he did with Scizor and Magneton (Amelia's Magneton which was at Peak Elite level and Scizor was at Mid Pseudo King Level) for 3 hours and also in his diet, some food which were good for Steel type was added so that his Steel Element core can be awaken and it was also good because Scyther could evolve in Scizor easily within 2 years if his Metal Element was awaken.

Ethen was also excited for what pokemon will he get from University, because usually University gets pokemon of atleast Sliver Potential up to Diamond Potential (4 out of 100) from different regions for second year students and pokemon are mainly royal pokemon of each region (Starter Pokemons as seen in anime or games) or Pseudo Legendary ( 10 in 100, which is also a great number). If Ethen was lucky and got a Pseudo Legendary then he will get a pokemon with atleast Gold Potential or if his luck is too good then a Diamond Potential pokemon (Only Pseudo Legendary are born with Gold or Diamond Potential and others are born with maximum Gold Potential).

Though potential of a pokemon can be upgraded but usually it costs alot to upgrade potential of a pokemon from Gold to Diamond and can take up to 5-10 years. Though upgrading a Normal potential pokemon to Silver Potential is easy (but costly) and can easily be done with good food or other high quality materials within a period of 2 years (Average time taken with Good materials not top as top food can reduce same time by atleast 25%) but a silver pokemon can be upgraded to gold potential in 3 years even after providing Top quality food everyday (Though if provided high quality materials in addition to food then time can be reduced to 2 years).

That's why generally people prefer a pokemon with atleast Silver Potential, so to avoid abusing of pokemons with low potential, Kanto League made a strict rule to provide Complete Pokedex (As only fully upgraded pokedex can only show potential of pokemon with accuracy rate of 95%) to only those who are graduated from Pokemon University or Gym Leaders or Elite Trainer who show extraordinary talent as such trainers doesn't abuse their pokemon. The pokedex provided to students from second year have all function except function to display Potential, these pokedex can also be provided to other trainers above rookie level as well.

Generally, Ethen doesn't care much about potential of a pokemon as it can be upgraded but duration to train certain moves of such pokemon take longer then pokemon of similar species with higher potential.

"Ethen take a break and let your pokemon have lunch" Ethen's Grandma Mrs. Smith said who was also impressed by the techniques Ethen used to train his pokemon.

"Ok Grandma." Replied Ethan and picked up his Nidoran and followed his grandparents back to house.
