Tommy dismounted and hobbled his mare, then lifted down the saddlebags that had been packed with their lunch. “‘Nice’ had nothing to do with it. I think Mother cares more about that baby than she does about me.” He spread a blanket on the ground.

“Oh?” Roddy set about unsaddling the horses and removing their bridles. He murmured in their ears in Arabic, “Enjoy this fine grass, my lovely drinkers of the wind.”

“And I’d swear you love these horses more than me.”

“Not likely. But do I detect a pout there?” He sat down on the blanket, then tugged off his boots, stretched out, and made himself comfortable. He watched as Tommy stared avidly at him. What was causing that blush to rise in his cheeks?
