Chapter 31

Once he was done, he put his worn sneakers back on. They’d fall off if he shifted, so he wouldn’t get tangled in them. Sean continued to walk, feeling the slight breeze and smelling the forest. It was beautiful, but since it was already afternoon and the forest was thick, it wasn’t that warm, and he started to shiver.

Eventually, to his surprise, the shivering went away, and he found a sunny little spot on another fallen log—he was not stupid enough to sit on cold stone buck naked, after all—and let all his thoughts drain away.

He sat there in silence, listening to the forest while trying to scope inside for the wolf. Eyes closed, posture relaxed, he sat there and casually wondered what the border patrol would say if they came across him right then. Grinning, Sean resisted the urge to open his eyes and look around for them. Not that he was close enough to the border right then, he didn’t think.
