Finally, forcing a shuddering breath into his body, he croaked, “Mother?” Danny cleared his throat and pushed on. “Mother, I want you to call off the wedding.” A cold wave of despair engulfed him as he voiced the words that would end his chance of a life with Evan.
“What!” Evan swiveled around to stare open-mouthed at his fiancé. “You want to just walk away?”
Nessa’s reaction was just as strong. “Nonsense. Nothing has changed except that Evan needs to be protected. Someone is trying to prevent the alliance between the two families. In another three days it will be finalized, and their plan will have failed.”
Danny straightened stiffly and faced his mother. The look in her eye was daunting, but he wasn’t going to back down. Not about this. “I’m sorry, Mother, but you can’t know that. The publicity about the wedding could have merely brought Evan to light as a convenient weapon to use against us. There’s no guarantee he’ll be safe after it’s over.”
