Chapter 70: Fairy Law

When Natsu arrived on the second floor, he noticed Makarov getting into the position to cast 'Fairy Law'. He had a serious expression on his face looking at Jose. He created a golden sphere of compressed Light Magic in between his palms, preparing to cast the legendary spell.

"This is your last chance to surrender, Jose. Get on your knees within three seconds or else I'll obliterate you." Makarov said while further compressing the golden sphere. It exuded a terrifying magical pressure making Jose sweat profusely.

"Haha, have you gone senile Makarov? You may be a bit stronger than me but that doesn't mean I'm so easily defeated." Jose said with a nervous laugh, his back drenched in cold sweat after feeling the rapidly increasing pressure released from the sphere in between Makarov's palms.

"Three…" Makarov ignored Jose's words and continued his countdown with an expressionless face. Jose started getting worried after seeing that.

"You must be kidding right, Makarov? Do you really believe you can take me down with a single attack? That must be the biggest joke I've ever heard, haha…" Jose laughed nervously.

"Two…" Makarov ignored him and continued his countdown. He closed his eyes to focus and compressed the sphere into the size of a tennis ball, further increasing the intensity of the spell.

"..."

Jose didn't have anything to say looking at this. He felt the overwhelming pressure of the sphere making him break out in cold sweat, but he still felt that he wouldn't be taken out by such an attack.

"One…" Makarov continued his countdown. He further compressed the golden sphere into the size of a ping-pong ball. This caused the pressure excluding from the sphere to go off the charts. Even the surroundings started getting affected by it. The wind started picking up speed while the ocean started shaking violently, making everyone afraid. It looked like the beginning of a catastrophe.

"Dammit! I will never apologize to you. Don't think that I will let you continue on with this. Shade Magic: Dead Wave!" Jose shouted angrily before casting his magic. He extended his right arm sideways and generated several of his ghosts around it, which start circling it in spirals. He subsequently shaped the ghosts into a destructive wave of Darkness Magic and sent it rushing at Makarov, splitting anything in its path including the ground itself.

Makarov didn't pay any attention to the incoming attack and kept his eyes closed. When the attack was almost within reach, he suddenly opened his eyes which had some strange magic symbols on them.

"Zero… Fairy Law ACTIVATE!!" Makarov shouted while pressing his palms together in a praying motion, forcing the sphere to compress further. An enormous magic circle appeared in the sky. The sphere exploded into a bright light engulfing everything. The magic circle also glowed, amplifying the light that engulfed everything within a 100-meter radius.

Jose's attack was instantly wiped out making him wide-eyed. He was engulfed by the holy light of 'Fairy Law' spell burning him from the inside out. He was a dark magic user, so those lights were even more effective against him. The light didn't just stop there, they engulfed everything within its range, attacking every Phantom Lord guild member that had malicious intentions towards 'Fairy Tail'.

"ARGHHH!!!" Jose screamed painfully before falling on his knees. He felt excruciating pain from those lights and kept on rolling on the floor with an agonized expression. The same thing happened to all those 'Phantom Lord' wizards who were hostile against 'Fairy Tail'.

Natsu watched this in silence. He felt awed by the power of the spell. It truly deserved to be called one of the three great fairy spells. He memorized the way Makarov cast the spell, making it easier for him to copy it later if Makarov didn't permit him to learn it.

'Fairy law is truly a legendary spell. Now, I can understand why it's backlash is so harsh when the cast is unsuccessful.' Natsu thought, remembering about the backlash of 'Fairy Law'. Mavis became cursed because of the backlash if he remembered things correctly.

After the light disappeared, he found Makarov looking at the fainted Jose tiredly. It must have taken a huge toll on him to cast such a powerful spell after all.

"You can come out now, Natsu. You know it's rude to peep on other's battles." Makarov said loudly looking at Natsu's direction. He obviously noticed Natsu's presence since Natsu didn't bother to hide it.

"Hehe, sorry about that, gramps! I just wanted to see the legendary spell with my own eyes. Can you blame me though? It was so epic. I didn't know 'Fairy Law' was so powerful." Natsu said with a sheepish laugh making Makarov narrow his eyes. Then, he just let out a tired sigh and shook his head.

"I didn't want to use this spell if possible, but it would take too long to defeat him without using 'Fairy Law'," Makarov replied while looking tired. He was visibly exhausted after the fight.

"Anyways, can you teach me this spell? It looks pretty powerful after all." Natsu asked getting right into the point.

"Are you sure, Natsu? I will admit that 'Fairy Law' is pretty powerful, but at the same time it's even more dangerous. If you fail to cast the spell perfectly then you'll receive a terrible backlash. Trust me Natsu, it's not worth wasting your time to learn such a troublesome spell." Makarov said, trying to discourage him from learning the spell. He knew about the spell's harsh backlash in case of an unsuccessful cast which would ruin the life of the caster forever.

"Yeah, I'm 100% sure Gramps! I know it's dangerous but the reward will be equally great." He answered with a grin, making Makarov sigh.

Then, he turned his back toward Natsu and said sternly, "Then come visit me later in my office. I'll teach you everything I know about 'Fairy Law'. I know you'll probably try to learn it whether I allow it or not. So, it's better for me to supervise you while you're learning this spell. I don't want you to accidentally destroy the whole Magnolia while practicing after all. For now, let's return to the guild. The 'Rune Knights should arrive soon. Ugh, I'm feeling a headache coming just imagining the upcoming trouble with the council."

Makarov started leaving the area, leaving Natsu with a happy expression. He was glad that Makarov didn't deny him from learning 'Fairy Law'. It would be a waste not to learn such a powerful spell after all.

'I wonder what Mira and Erza are up to. They must have handled the cannon fodders pretty easily.' He thought while leaving the area as well, going downstairs to meet with his lovers.
