The woman watched in horror as she lost her leverage. With tears welling along her eyelids, she decided to flee.
Luca and the other agents would chase, but the guards had already called out and were in pursuit. They only turned to a direction and saw nurses running to their spot.
Noah gave the baby to the nurses who thanked him for retrieving her. The mother had also cried and thanked him profusely. His good acting seemed to be quite awkward to the other SCC members who knew that he was an assassin while Luca sighed in relief.
They had all taken their separate ways to keep up with the cover. Noah then walked to the bathroom and hid inside one of the cubicles. He used his smartwatch to give Theresa a feed of the stick he found on the baby.
"That's weird. I've never seen one before, but the writings on it were similar to the ones written in witch guns. They must be from the same lexicon." Her voice echoed from the watch. "I'll run the photos and see if they were being sold somewhere in Manhattan."
"Okay."
"Oh, Luca sent me a feed about the woman who stole the baby. Her name is Mariana Moore, 46. Her family lives in Manhattan, and her husband works in Connor Holdings as a human resource manager." Theresa pulled up a sheet containing details about the woman, and her involvement with Connor Holdings—above anything else—made Noah frown.
Theresa paused as she didn't hear anything from Noah. She then asked, "Would you like to see if she made it back home?"
"I can track her. I'll pay a visit." Noah refused her help. Caliga could find the hellhound that followed the woman as much as Noah could. "If her husband is connected to Connor Holdings, the coven must be pushing her past her limits.
"Don't worry, I'll take Luca with me. Keep an eye on Not-Randy—I mean the impostor for me."
"Hehe, he's legally Thomas Connor."
"Still Not-Randy."
…
Mariana kept her head down as if hiding from the light coming from her already-boarded up kitchen window. She lived in a detached house with a big yard, along with her husband and three daughters.
Her hands were crushing her head as she cried quietly. Soon, her body shook as she heard a voice call out to her.
"Mariana! Mariana!"
The voice of her husband called out, and she knew that she had messed up. Her jelly legs supported her shaken body as she slowly climbed the stairs to their master bedroom.
When she opened the door, the stench of dead animals flooded her nose. Her eyes continued to redden and water as she pushed the door open.
The three daughters from twenty to fourteen were bound at the corner, crying as they couldn't last with the smell the dead cats and birds were producing.
In the center of the room was the father who was surrounded by half-eaten carcasses. His eyes had a red glow while his skin was discolored from Caucasian to gray.
"Where's the child?" the father asked, "Didn't I tell you that I will eat a daughter if you didn't bring me a baby?"
"Please give me more time—"
"I've already given you three days!" He lifted his arm which already had some chunks of meat eaten from it. "Do I have to remind you?"
Mariana's heart was shattered.
With the amount of lost flesh, her husband must have already bled out for the three days she didn't return home. Then, her eyes went to the three daughters who were barely surviving with hope. She then turned to the husband, but he was already standing in front of her.
"Mama!" The daughters cried as their mother was suddenly pushed down by the male. They then watched him mount on her and trap her by holding onto her wrists over her head. Laughter accompanied their agonizing cries.
"Silence! The noisiest would have to go first!" The male barked at the daughters before looking down at the mother under him. "I won't hesitate to eat you and then your daughters.
"Now, now, your husband couldn't feed me so you might have to do. Remember… he's still alive and struggling~"
"Lies!"
A voice called out, and the boarded window of the master bedroom broke. Two figures broke inside, and one even used a clawed hand to grab the man off of the mother. The other figure went in between the possessed man on the floor and the mother who was in shock.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. Your husband's gone. All that's left is a body hosting a demonic entity." Luca aimed a gun at the man's face. As they were in a residential area, he couldn't possibly bring his hand cannon. "We will assure you that he'd be freed."
"I've never seen a lowlife demon before." Noah whistled as he stared at the man.
As he was gifted by the eyes of a hellhound, he could see the underlying image of the demon overlapping with the human host's. The demon looked like a fat blob with a huge face on the chest.
"Lowlife demon?! How dare you?!" The demon growled. "I will show you lowlife while you melt inside my belly!"
The demon jumped from the floor, but Luca fired at the hands of the man. With the bones holding the wrists shattered, the grip wasn't present anymore.
The demon failed to mount on the wall like he wanted to do, and Noah just dashed to grab the demon's neck. He threw him to the floor, causing the body to punch a hole without falling down.
A pained cry came from the demon—and a scared squeal when a witch tech gun was shoved to his chest… where his face really was. "P-Please mercy!"
Luca only frowned. Noah then held onto the neck again before the hunter used his power ring to produce a pentagram with Enochian writings circulating it.
With a chant, he started exorcising the demon while Noah was holding it down. Even Caliga and another hellhound were biting down the legs so the man couldn't kick.
The pressure in the room soon lightened up, and the smell of sulfur vanished. The man was taken out of the pothole on the floor, but the two men didn't leave just yet. Luca went to release the daughters and induced a memory loss for the days they had to deal with it.
"W-Who are you?" Mariana had lost her voice to shock earlier. Now that it's all over, she couldn't help but wonder. This man was the doctor, and that man was one of those bystanders. Did they know she was coming to the hospital later?
"Do you know MIB?" Noah asked in a flat face. "We're like MIB, but for demons."
"What…?" Luca whispered as he was weirded out by such a short and ridiculous explanation. However, what puzzled him more was that the mother seemed to understand what he meant.
He then walked up to the mother and assessed her wounds. "Don't worry, we'll call the police to help you. It would look like a robbery gone wrong. I'm sorry for your loss."
The mother looked up at Luca and held onto his shirt. "I'm not alone. I think everyone in Connor Holdings is suffering. Please help them all. My best friend is a clerk there. Please, please don't let her suffer."
Luca only promised her before erasing her memories about the encounter. She was not a witch that gave permission for the demon to affect her reality. They all deserved to live a life of bliss and ignorance, away from dangerous things like these.
"That wasn't a demon of wrath. I used the expulsion for a different army." Luca turned to Noah who was asking the hellhounds to eat the dead animals. "This is from the gluttony. This is Beelzebub."
"I see… so someone still chose the wrong side." Noah huffed. He was aware that at least three demon princes shared the same sentiments with Belphegor. Even if Asmodeus abstained, that would leave Satan with just one brother. For Beelzebub to be that brother…
Noah then hummed as he realized a problem. Then again, he didn't let it bother them too much as they prepared to leave the scene. Luca then left a prayer for the husband and a mark to shield the house from any low-level demons that might prey on the grieving family that lost their head.
Walking away from the house, Noah fished something from his pocket and showed it to Luca. "Do you recognize what this is?"
"This…" Luca's face fell as he stared at the broken half of the stick. "This is known as a simple magic stick in the black market. It could contain one magic, and that's all there is. Where did you find this?"
"On the baby. It's probably keeping her from waking up." Noah retrieved the stick. "If Mariana got her hands on this, then there should be a market nearby. I'm guessing there should be a witch lair somewhere in Manhattan."
"I can help you track that down, but it'd be easier to see if SCC knows." Luca agreed, but he still shook his head at something. "However, you might need to go without me. They won't deal with hunters, and they will be on their guard if I am with you."
"Just stay outside then. I'll prepare for it." Noah understood and didn't insist on going alone. "For now, continue watching Not-Randy—"
"Thomas."
"Whatever."
