I say this because if he says he hates the protagonist, the fanfic does not go very far, you must bear in mind that the best fanficics are where the mc takes the place of the protagonist or befriends the protagonist.

It literally sounds like you're judging a story based on your own bias and not on the actual quality of the story. Also a majority of fanfics where the mc befriends the original mc are absolute trash. So I don't even think your own logic holds up as well.
