That's a good analysis. She can control the energy she can make contact with at a small radius around her body. While her control is accurate block a gems energy would be very hard. The gems condense energy from their bodies. To make something like that Asha should constantly modify a energy with a force being applied constantly. If she was in her normal state that might be possible but not broken. Maybe if she makes direct contact and the other gem isn't trying to manipulate energy she could do it, but not in all circunstances. It's as though you can manipulate water but tries to stop a tsunami from an entire city.
