it is still just japan that we are looking at. Just because something isn't internationally successful doesn't mean that its not selling well domestically. lots of manga that's internationally big never see success in japan and some even get axed. considering this is manga industry focused super japan that has insanely boosted population, you can see why project that saw insane success in japan would be loved. also just bc it wasn't as legacy defining as big 3 doesn't stop it from being more successful than lots of mega successful manga i listed. this story is also showing us mainly hype and success projects receive during publishing and its also written by young artist who has 2 good successful manga. who knows if it will be as big 10 years later, after hype dies down and manga stops publishing.

hikaru no go manga sold 25 mil in 5 years and only stayed outside of top ranking because it was competing with one piece, bleach, hxh and naruto. why tf does so many of you pretend that it wasn't insanely successful. It outsold evangelion, parasyte, gantz, Terra Formars, Made in Abyss, soul eater, fire force, magi, monster and The Quintessential Quintuplets while airing for almost half the time others did. both manga and anime were insanely successful.
