From his own experience against Grindelwald, a tremendous amount of energy, concentrated into dimensional magic could theoretically rupture a champion's connection to the entities, but other than that, he really had no other way of harming them permanently. He needed to look at it, and get more insight from the 'wisest man in history', and Voldemort was the key to that.
