Well I made a mistake in describing how the ships were positioned. Look at it this way. The lead ship is at the front. It's the largest of them all so obviously its at the front. the other two are smaller than the lead ship but the same size as each other and they are flying slightly lower than the lead ship on either side. Similar to how fighter jets move together.
