yea he was supposed to die a lot including atleast 4 times by betrayel once from a random stranger, second from one of random teammates, third from that girl he took in, and fourth from his roommate, also a few times from fighting zombies and other survivors by making big and small mistakes during fight, also growing through this and becoming a ruthless character like the MC od Reverend Insanity (if this novels doesn't do that than any writer reading this pls write a story like this)
