While wolves are my favorite animals, for your character, I think tigers would be suitable. Tigers are solitary creatures like your character. They are some of the best, if not the best, swimmers among big cats, not to mention you have the divine beast Byakko, who many stories have aligned with lightning.

This is probably my favorite Hunter x Hunter fanfic I have read to date.
