The fact is sure, the ranger was confused about what it wanted to be, but it's still a valid option that gives access to a variety of abilities and roleplay opportunities. And it's not exaclty about the quality of the DM, it's about the quality of the session 0, the world being played, and the roleplay akill of the player

I actually have played Ranger. And it is really fun if you can plan ahead and talk to the DM. I personally played a Lizardman Ranger during a swamp campaign, I was basically a local and guide, maybe not the best mechanically, but the build really led into some good roleplay

But the roleplay is the main focus. Why eliminate an entire set of options just to be more "powerful"? You're better off playing the character you want

I really enjoy their dynamic right now, twin brothers, a warrior, and a blacksmith, one makes the tools and the other uses them, it's kinda perfect, I think I'm gonna write something similar as NPCs for my next D&D game

Soldiers likely arent allowed to travel from their posts very often, and their service doesn't last lifelong, it's only a couple years, likely the military would be releasing massive numbers of people at this time due to the short turnover time

Personally I'm very happy it took a different path. I've never read a story with a MC that had a class like this so im excited to see where it goes!
