I highly recommend not attempting one, even if you have experience. Systems also commonly become crutches that stifle creativity. Meaning instead of figuring out an in universe way to solve a problem, they deus ex machina it with the system.

that's not what Sparta gets wrong... No Sparta's problem is that it believes a State is only powerful if it's army is made up of only elite special forces. the Roman Empire was an authoritarian State first entity and it did pretty well all things considered. Only when weak emperors came to power did things start to go poorly. The problem is more the overall focus and culture of the State rather than the government type.
