You don't remember the ghosts came out when sanity drops ? It's one of the oldest mechanics. They will only attack when persons sanity is too low and until that point you cant harm ghosts . No one other than low sanity person can't see or interact with them so you are alone :D Considering Devas sanity can't drop only thing he can do give them spirit damaging weapons .
