The Glory of The Unknown

Games are for… fun? You’re right, there’s nothing wrong with what you said, but do remember, not everyone has the same mindset. These fellows beside me, they play the game for glory! They are dedicated gamers from all around the globe with one sole goal, GLORY! Okay maybe I over exaggerated but do know. The name of the game! IIIT’s REALM OF GLORY!

The Start

After getting rid of a huge liability, I lived a pretty simple life, in the morning going to school and when school was over I'd go to work. Like that a whole month passed.

During this period, a game was getting popular, Realm of Glory. It was a state of the art VRMMORPG with cutting edge graphics, heck, even the NPC's felt alive. The game immerses you in its world and really made you forget about the real world… or so it was advertised.

Drawn by an advertisement, I was at a game store by the time I noticed. Thinking to myself 'I could use some leisure activity in my life.' I decided to buy the specialized VR headset for the game at a whopping eight hundred dollars, the disappearance of the money felt tangible even though it was done digitally and I hoped that I wouldn't regret it and honestly, I thought I did and I'm glad I didn't.

I drove myself to my house and got into my simply adorn bedroom consisting of a bed, a nightstand, a study desk, and a computer. At this moment, I was feeling hyper and couldn't wait to try it out.

'Here goes nothing, I'm really nervous aren't I? Hopefully I won't regret this."

"Start!"

"Initializing…"

"Scanning brainwaves…"

"Identifying user…"

"Creating account…"

"Hello, Alisa here, please choose your starting class as well as your race."

'Hm… I guess I'm just playing for fun so I'll choose whatever I fancy.'

"Rogue class, Human race."

"Selection confirmed, please customize your character."

What appeared before me was character model that looked completely average, short black hair lightly styled with a comb but mostly left natural with a squarish face that lightly angled down at the chain. Eyes brown with a height of 1.82 centimeters. Nothing was special. It was me.

Altering the face a bit here and there, my appearance started to change. At some point I became completely unrecognizable. Honestly I wasn't that great at customizing so my character didn't look amazing, it actually looked freakish… appalled by my own creation I decided to just go back to default.

"Please choose a name."

"Hm… Peasant."

"Name taken."

"How about Heissenberg?"

"Name taken."

"BladeLord."

"Name ta…"

…..

….

"Hysteria?"

"Name Available."

"Game Start!"

"Welcome to tutorial village 9002, please have a pleasant experience."

"Wait, that's it? Hello? Hello!? How are you going to introduce yourself with a name and leave so fast?!"

And just like that the game left me to my own device. Completely clueless about the game.

'Damn what the heck, are those players all crowding around the npc for a quest? Wtf, I'm not gonna play a game and just stand in line for a great duration of the game, freak that, the exit to the town seems to be that way.'

And so I walked through the gates and into the wilderness… filled with players murdering low-level mobs such as rabbits and squirrels.

"This game is a giant clusterfuck…"

"Yeah.. I couldn't agree more. So get grinding! LEEEROY JENNKKIINNSS!!!"

"What the fu…"

'I guess he's got a point though, but I'm not going to stay in this player-packed slaughterhouse. There may be less players further out, actually I hope there are less players further out. There should be less people out."

Walking through the many bodies, I finally managed to get to a relatively empty-of-player forest land after thirty minutes of walking in the same direction. After a couple minutes of observations, it seems this area is occupied by wolves and they roam in pairs.

Eyeing the two wolves coming my directing, I bent my body down and hid behind a bush as I waited for wolves to come within striking distance. When the first one passed me by two meters the second one started to sniff in my direction. Although it's companion was sniffing my location the second wolf just kept walking.

I waited with baited breath and when it finally reached striking distance, with both daggers held in a reverse grip, I brought the daggers down onto the skull of the wolf and pinned it with my body as I lifted the dagger on my right hand and continued the motion of driving the dagger in and out of its head. After five or so strikes, the wolf faded into light and left a fang in place as well as a couple copper coins.

I would've grabbed the loot, but the other wolf had noticed the commotion and was literally right in my face. Somehow I managed to get an upper cut on the wolf but that left us in a stare down. It slowly circled me as it snarled. It must've bitten itself when I gave it an upper cut because it was bleeding from the mouth which gave it a terrifying look.

"The graphics are too damn realistic."

I switched my daggers back to a normal grip as I eyed the wolf. Having lost its patience the wolf charged and leapt my way with its sharp white teeth glaring from the sun.

The attack was pretty telegraphed so I drove my dagger up it's jaw and through its head with the dagger in my right hand as I soon followed it up with a dagger through its stomach. Lifting it up with both daggers, I changed to a reverse grip and slammed its body down to the ground with both daggers nailing it to the floor. It then dissolved into light particles and left behind a a tooth and a couple copper coins.

"Level Up!"
