The Daily Grind

I yawned, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. Another day in my monotonous routine, but I couldn't afford to slack off. I had school, work, and my sickly aunt to take care of, and I couldn't let any of them down.

My phone buzzed loudly on the nightstand. I groaned and fumbled around for my phone before answering with a sleepy "Hello?"

"Yo, little man, you workin' today?" The voice on the other end was rough and unmistakably Maine, his boss at the convenience store where he worked part-time.

I replied with a groggy "Yeah, after school I'll be there." As I checked the time, I realized I only had a few minutes to make it to school. I rushed out the door, hoping I wouldn't be late yet again.

"Good. We got a shipment of new chips and sodas coming in today, and I need you to help stock the shelves."

"Yeah, I'll be there," I said resignedly.

"Great. And kid?" Maine added before hanging up. "Don't be late." I couldn't afford to be late for work again, especially after the last time when I got caught up in my science project and ended up being an hour late. It was a close call.

I stagger into the bathroom and splash my face with cold water. I brush my teeth and hastily get dressed for the day. Today is the school field trip to Oscorp, one of the biggest corporations in the city.

Suddenly, Aunt May calls me from downstairs, "Patrick, time for breakfast! You're gonna be late!"

"Yeah, coming!" I shout back, I made my way down the stairs, and I was greeted by the smell of bacon and eggs cooking in the kitchen. Aunt May, who had been battling a chronic illness for years, had managed to get up early to make me breakfast.

"Morning, Aunt May," I said with a smile, giving her a quick hug. "Thanks for breakfast, but you didn't have to do all this."

"I know, dear, but I wanted to do something nice for you," she replied with a weak smile. "You work so hard, and you deserve a good meal before you start your day."

I sat down at the kitchen table and dug into my breakfast, savoring the taste of the crispy bacon and runny eggs. I knew I couldn't afford to be late for school, so I scarfed down my food and headed out the door.

"Be safe, Patrick," his aunt called out after him. "And don't forget to take your vitamins!"

"Okay, Aunt May," I reply, giving her a quick wave goodbye as I rush out the door.

As I walked to the bus stop, I couldn't help but feel a sense of restlessness. I knew there was more to life than this daily grind of school, work, and taking care of my sickly aunt. But I didn't know how to break free from it.

My mind was already buzzing with ideas for my latest science project, but I knew I had to focus on getting through the day first.

"Hey, Patrick, wait up!" a voice called out from behind him. I turned around to see his best friend, Ned, jogging up to him.

"What's up, Ned?" I asked, giving him a fist bump. "Not much, just trying to make it to school on time," Ned replied, panting slightly. "Hey, did you hear about the field trip today? We're going to some genetics research facility."

Ned was a chubby guy with rosy cheeks, short brown hair that was always slightly messy, and warm brown eyes that gave him a friendly look. He often wore a Darth Vader t-shirt.

"Yeah, I know," I replied, feeling a sense of excitement building up inside me. "It's Oscorp, one of the biggest genetics research facilities in the world. I can't wait to see what kind of cutting-edge technology they have there."

"Oh man, you're right! This is gonna be so cool," exclaimed Ned, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "I've always wanted to see their labs and equipment in person. We might even get to meet some of the scientists there!"

Ned and I chatted excitedly as we waited for the bus to arrive. I couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement as we talked about the field trip to Oscorp. Is a multinational corporation that specializes in genetic engineering, robotics, and other advanced technologies.

As we hopped onto the bus and found a seat near the back, we continued our discussion about the field trip. We shared our hopes of what we would see and learn, and our anticipation grew with each passing minute.

Ned's eyes lit up with excitement as he turned to me. "Do you think they'll let us see the labs?" he asked, his eagerness palpable. I felt a rush of excitement building in my chest, unable to contain my anticipation. "I don't know, but I hope so," I replied, my voice filled with enthusiasm. "I've always been fascinated by genetics, and this could be our chance to learn something new."

As we chatted excitedly about the field trip, we were suddenly interrupted by a loud, taunting voice. "Sup, nerds" It was Flash Thompson, the school bully, and his gang. They had a reputation for picking on students who they deemed as weaker than them, and we knew better than to engage with them.

Flash was a tall, muscular guy with a buzz cut hairstyle and piercing blue eyes. He wore a white shirt with a Midtown High football team jacket, which matched his gang members.

"What are you guys talking about?" Flash asked, sneering at us with a smug look on his face. His lackeys snickered behind him, egging him on.

Ned and I exchanged nervous glances, unsure of how to respond. We tried to ignore him, hoping he would go away, but Flash wasn't one to back down easily. We braced ourselves for the worst as he stepped closer, his fists clenched at his sides.

Patrick's heart sank as he heard Flash's voice. The familiar fear and intimidation he felt around him washed over him like a wave. His eyes darted to the ground, hoping to avoid any eye contact that might provoke him. "Uh, just about the field trip to Oscorp," Patrick replied nervously. His voice barely above a whisper, as if he was afraid to be heard.

Patrick's heart sank as he heard Flash's voice. He knew what was coming next. "Huh, you nerds actually think you're going to learn something useful there?" Flash sneered, his voice laced with contempt. "You guys are such losers." Patrick felt his face grow hot with anger and shame, but he tried to keep his composure.

My heart pounded in my chest as I felt Flash's hot breath on my face. My eyes flickered nervously to his lackeys, who snickered and jeered in the background. I wanted to tell him to back off, to show him that I wasn't afraid, but the words got stuck in my throat. Ultimately, all I could manage was a meek, "Leave us alone."

"Aw, does the little nerd not want to talk to us?" Flash taunted, poking Patrick in the chest. "I bet you're too scared to even step foot inside Oscorp. You're probably too stupid to understand anything they're doing in there anyway."

As Flash taunted me, his finger poking into my chest, my heart raced with fear and anger. I wanted to stand up to him, to show him that his words couldn't hurt me, but my voice caught in my throat. The words echoed in my head, "too scared" and "too stupid." I couldn't shake them off. I wanted to prove him wrong, to show him that I was capable of understanding the science inside Oscorp, but his taunts made me doubt myself.

Ned, sensing the tension, spoke up. "Hey, Flash, leave him alone. We're just excited about the field trip."

Flash sneered at Ned, his eyes glinting with malice. "Shut up, pig!" he spat. "No one gave you permission to talk back to me, got it?"

"Or do you want another underwear incident like that one-time pig?" he sneered, referring to the incident months ago where he and his gang had forced Ned to wear his underwear on his head and pushed him into a crowd watching a basketball game. I felt a wave of anger wash over me, but I didn't say anything, knowing that it would only make things worse.

Flash sneered at Ned, his voice dripping with malice. "So be a good little piggy and keep quiet, got it?" Ned flinched at the insult, but remained silent, knowing that any protest would only make things worse.

"Yes," Ned replied quietly, his head down in fear and embarrassment, too intimidated by Flash's bullying to stand up for himself.

The hurt and anger burned inside of me as I watched Flash bully Ned. I clench my fists, feeling a surge of adrenaline as I stand up from my seat. "Stop it, Flash!" I said, trying to sound confident even though my heart was pounding in my chest. "Leave us alone. We have just as much right to go on the field trip as anyone else."

"Leave Ned out of this, Flash," I said firmly, my fists clenched in anger. "If you want to bully someone, bully me, not him."

Ned's expression softened as he looked at me with gratitude. I felt a sense of pride knowing that I stood up for him. It wasn't easy, but it was the right thing to do. Bullies like only thrive when they see fear, and I refused to give him that satisfaction.

"Well, look who finally decided to grow a pair," sneered Flash, flanked by his lackeys. "You gonna try and fight me, nerd?" He and his friends chuckled at the thought.

Patrick's heart raced and his palms grew clammy as he stood his ground, refusing to back down in front of Flash and his gang. His whole body trembled with a mix of fear and anger, but he tried to stay focused, determined to protect himself and his friend from further bullying.

"Flash, leave them alone already," said another voice. It was Mary Jane, Flash's girlfriend.

Mary Jane had hyper-vibrant red hair that stood out in a crowd. She had a beautiful face with high cheekbones and full lips. Her bright green eyes seemed to sparkle with mischief. She wore a fitted eagle t-shirt that showed off her curves and a little bit of cleavage.

Gwen Stacy stepped forward, her expression one of disapproval. "Yeah, not cool man," she said to Flash.

Gwen Stacy wears a purple hoodie, black leggings, and white sneakers. She has short white-blonde hair, green eyes, and a slim build.

Flash turned around to see Mary Jane and Gwen standing behind him. He scowled at them before turning back to Patrick. "Fine, but this isn't over," he said before storming off with his lackeys.

Patrick let out a sigh of relief as he watched Flash leave. He couldn't believe that Mary Jane and Gwen had come to their rescue. "Thanks," he said, grateful for their help.

Mary Jane smiled at Patrick and Ned, "Hey guys, sorry about Max. He can be a real jerk sometimes."

Gwen Stacy waved at them from a few seats away and chimed in, "Yeah, don't mind him. He's all bark and no bite."

"I'm not so sure about that, Gwen," Patrick replied with a hesitant tone. "After all, he's the star quarterback of the football team."

"Patrick, don't worry too much," Gwen said with a reassuring smile. "You've got us on your side. And if Flash and his lackeys try to bully you again, just give me and Mary Jane a call. We'll be there to back you up."

"Sure thing, and thanks for the help," I said, turning to both Mary Jane and Gwen.

"You're welcome," Mary Jane replied with a smile.

"Anytime," Gwen added, nodding in agreement.

As the bus pulled up to Midtown High School, everyone started shuffling out. Ned and I followed suit, only to be met with an unwelcome surprise. Flash hit me on the shoulder, and I knew what was coming next. "I'm not done with you yet, Malley," he sneered. And just as I thought it couldn't get any worse, he turned to Ned and added, "And you, pig, don't think I've forgotten about you."

Flash scoffed at us and looked over his shoulder as Mary Jane called him to hurry up. "Just you wait, you two," he said, his lackeys snickering behind him. I felt a chill run down my spine at his threat, but I tried to push it aside and focus on getting to class. Mary Jane was right, we didn't have time for this.

"Let's go, Ned, or we're going to be late for first period," I said, starting to walk toward the building. "Yeah, coming," he replied, catching up to me. "Hey, thanks for sticking up for me back there, it means a lot," Ned said gratefully.

"Of course, anything for a friend. We always stick together, okay?" I replied, sticking out my fist for a fist bump. "Yeah, always," he said, fist-bumping me back. It felt good to know that I had someone's back and that I could count on my friend to have mine.

As we walked towards our first class, Ned and I were caught off guard by Gwen catching up to us. "Hey wait you two," she called out. "We have the same period. Do you guys mind if I tag along?" I smiled and replied, "Yeah sure, we don't mind. More the merrier, right Ned?" Ned nodded in agreement and we continued walking together towards our classroom.

As we walking to our classroom, Gwen complimented me on standing up to Flash earlier. "You look cool, what you did back on the bus," she said with a smile.

I felt my cheeks turn red at the attention. "Oh, it was nothing," I replied, trying to play it off as no big deal. But Gwen wasn't going to let me off the hook that easily. "Come on, you were all like, Stop it, leave us alone and stop bullying my friend'," she said, imitating my voice and making us all laugh.

"Yeah, man, you're just like a superhero from the comics," Ned said to me, and I felt myself flush with embarrassment. "Yeah, I'm no superhero," I replied, feeling a bit embarrassed at Ned's comment.

I chuckled nervously, still feeling embarrassed about the whole situation. "I just couldn't stand by and let him bully Ned like that," I explained. "I had to do something."

Gwen nodded in understanding. "Well, it was really brave of you. Not everyone would have the courage to stand up to a bully like that."

Her words made me feel a little bit better about the whole thing. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing to stand up for what was right, even if it meant facing my fears.

As we entered the classroom, our teacher Roger Harrington greeted us, "Alright class, settle down now." He then proceeded to discuss the upcoming school trip to Oscorp. "I expect all of you to be on your best behavior. We don't want any accidents," warned Mr. Harrington. "Okay, class?"

"Yes, sir," we all replied in unison. With that, the class began. Our teacher Mr. Harrington started the physics lecture, but my mind kept drifting off to the upcoming school trip to Oscorp. I had heard a lot about the place, and I couldn't wait to explore the facility.

As Mr. Harrington continued his lecture, I scribbled some notes in my notebook and glanced over at Ned, who seemed equally uninterested in the lesson. Gwen, on the other hand, was listening intently and taking detailed notes. The teacher continued to lecture, and Patrick's mind drifted to the exciting possibilities that awaited him at Oscorp. He had always been fascinated by technology and couldn't wait to see what kind of cutting-edge innovations the company had in store. Perhaps he would even get to witness a scientific breakthrough firsthand.

Lost in his thoughts, Patrick barely noticed as the teacher handed out permission slips for the field trip. When he finally came back to reality, he eagerly scanned the form, ready to sign up for the trip without hesitation. After all, who wouldn't want to be a part of such a groundbreaking experience?

Excitement and anticipation bubbled within him as he handed back the permission slip and settled back into his seat, eagerly awaiting the day of the trip.

The bell finally rang, signaling the end of the period, and we all gathered our things and headed towards our next class. As we walked, Ned asked excitedly, "Are you guys ready for the Oscorp field trip? I heard they have some crazy tech there."

"I can't wait," I replied, feeling the excitement bubble inside me. "It's going to be awesome."

Gwen nodded in agreement. "We should definitely stick together and explore the place together."

I grinned, "Absolutely. It's going to be a blast."

We settled into our seats in the classroom, and our next teacher, Monica Warren, wasted no time. She began discussing our next subject, and we quickly shifted our focus to the lesson at hand. Monica was a no-nonsense teacher who expected nothing but our best effort in every class.

As she delved into the subject matter, I found myself engrossed in the topic. The conversation about the upcoming field trip to Oscorp was momentarily forgotten as we all eagerly absorbed the information being presented. Monica had a way of making even the driest subjects fascinating, and her enthusiasm was contagious.

When the bell rang, signaling the end of class, I was disappointed that the lesson had to end. But the excitement of the upcoming field trip to Oscorp quickly rekindled my spirits. We gathered our things and headed out, eagerly anticipating the adventure that awaited us.

As we sat down at the cafeteria, we eagerly discussed what we hoped to see at Oscorp. Ned took a bite of his sandwich, he exclaimed, "I'm so excited to see the robots at Oscorp! I heard they have some of the most advanced technology in the world."

"Hey, don't talk with food in your mouth, Ned," Patrick scolded with a smile.

"Sorry," Ned said after quickly swallowing his food. "But I'm just so excited! I heard they're making robots and hoverboards. How cool is that?" His eyes shone with enthusiasm as he spoke.

As Ned excitedly talked about the robots, Gwen laughed at his antics. I turned to her and asked, "Hey Gwen, are you sure you want to hang out with us? We're the school losers, after all."

Gwen's smile widened as she responded, "You two aren't losers at all. I think you guys are pretty cool."

I couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude towards Gwen. It felt good to be accepted, especially by someone as popular and kind-hearted as her. "Thanks, Gwen," I said, feeling a smile creep onto my face. "That means a lot coming from you."

Ned nodded in agreement, grinning from ear to ear. "Yeah, thanks, Gwen. You're awesome."

My phone started buzzing, and I quickly fished it out of my pocket to see that the caller was my boss, Maine. I excused myself from the table and headed out of the noisy cafeteria to find a quieter spot to take the call.

"I have a call from my boss," I explained to my friends before leaving. "You guys go ahead, and I'll catch up with you."

Ned and Gwen nodded understandingly, and I walked away, answering the call and trying to focus on the conversation despite the excitement of the upcoming Oscorp trip still bubbling inside me.

I left the cafeteria, feeling a sense of relief that I could take the call from my boss in peace. As I walked down the hallway, I noticed a group of guys eyeing me up. I recognized them as Flash and his cronies, the school bullies. I tried to ignore them and continue on my way, but Flash wasn't going to let me go that easily.

I found a quiet and secluded area to answer my phone call. "Hey Maine, what's up?" I said as I answered the call.

Maine's voice greeted me on the other end. "You think you can work overtime today little man, new shipments just arrived today and we need more hands on deck today think you can do it?" he asked.

I took a deep breath and paused for a moment to consider the offer. "Hold on, give me a sec to think," I said to Maine.

The thought of working overtime wasn't exactly thrilling, but I needed the extra money. I weighed the pros and cons in my head before making a decision.

I asked Maine what the new shipments were. "Oh, just cigarettes, ice cream, and alcohol. We also got some new magazines in," Maine replied.

I took a deep breath and thought about it. The extra work could mean a lot of extra cash. Maybe enough to buy Aunt May's medicine. She had been struggling lately and I wanted to help her in any way possible.

"Okay, I'll do it," I replied to Maine. "I could use the extra money."

"Great, thanks a lot, Patrick," Maine said."I knew I could count on you,"

But then, Maine surprised me by saying there was someone who wanted to talk to me. I asked who it was, but he wouldn't tell me. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice.

"Hey Patrick!!!" Rebecca, one of the workers at Maine Convenience store, shouted into the phone.

I nervously chuckled, knowing that Rebecca had a reputation for being tough on her coworkers. "Hey Rebecca, how are you doing?" I asked.

"You better be here today, Patrick. I ain't gonna do all this work by myself, so you better be here or you'll pay for it with my fist. Got it?" Rebecca threatened.

I replied quickly, "Yeah, yeah, I'll be there. Don't worry, but please don't hit me." trying to sound confident but knowing that I was going to get another beating from her if I didn't show up.

Rebecca didn't seem to care and replied, "Well, I don't really care. Show up, or you'll feel my fist," before hanging up on me.

I let out a sigh and shook my head. Rebecca may have been tough, but I knew I couldn't back out of my work commitment.

My phone buzzed again, and I saw a message from Aunt May. It read, "Take care and have fun, love you Patrick." I smiled at her sweet message and quickly replied, "Thanks, Aunt May. Love you too."

It was always nice to have someone who cared about me, especially since I didn't have many friends at school. I put my phone away and headed back to the cafeteria, hoping to catch up with Ned and Gwen.

As I walked towards the cafeteria, I suddenly found my path blocked by Flash, who had a menacing grin on his face. He cracked his knuckles and taunted me, "Well well, look who we have here. You think I forgot about you, Malley?" His guys moved in closer, awaiting his next move.

I could feel my heart racing as I took a step back. "I don't want any trouble, Flash," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Grab him," Flash commanded one of his lackeys. Before I knew it, someone grabbed me from behind and held me steady. I tried to break free, but it was no use. Flash punched me in the stomach, and I doubled over in pain.

"You like that, Malley?" Flash taunted, throwing another punch to my guts.

I winced in pain, but before I could catch my breath, he hit me again, this time in the face.

"You shouldn't been bold Malley" he taunted again, delivering a punch to my face. Blood dripped down from my nose, and I could feel the swelling on my cheek.

"Come on, Flash, that's enough," one of his guys said, looking uneasy.

Flash shot him a glare. "Shut up, we're not done here," he barked, turning back to me with a cruel grin.

"Hey Patrick, where are you?" Ned called out urgently. "The bus is arriving soon, man. Where are you?"

Ned rounded the corner, he saw Flash holding me up with blood trickling down from my nose. "Ned, run!" I shouted, but it was too late. One of Flash's lackeys had already caught Ned, and now he was being subjected to the same treatment as me.

"Ahh, the pig is here," said Flash, letting me go and walking towards Ned, cracking his knuckles. "I almost forgot about you. Now it's your turn, little piggy," he said, punching Ned in the gut just as he did to me.

I was unable to stand up, feeling helpless as I watched Flash mercilessly hurting Ned. I knew I had to do something.

"Let him go, Flash! It's me you want, not him," I pleaded with him as he continued punching Ned.

"Oh no, he deserves this," said Flash as he stopped punching Ned. He then walked towards me, bent down, and grabbed me by the hair. I winced in pain, but I refused to show any sign of weakness.

"Let go of me, Flash," I spat out, trying to free myself from his grip.

"You're going to regret what you did to me, Malley," he snarled, tightening his grip on my hair.

I could feel his hot breath on my face as he leaned in closer. I closed my eyes, waiting for the next blow.

Suddenly, another voice broke the tension. "Ned, where did you go? The bus just arrived," it was Gwen's voice. Flash released his grip on my hair, causing me to fall to the ground.

"We have to get out of here," Flash signaled to his lackeys, and they quickly scattered, not wanting to get caught.

I looked over at Ned, checking if he was okay. "Hey Ned, you alright?" I asked, concerned about his well-being.

"I'm okay," he replied, his face contorted in pain as he clutched his stomach.

Just then, Gwen rounded the corner and saw us on the ground. "What happened?" she asked, looking at our bruised and battered bodies.

I hesitated for a moment, not wanting to relive the ordeal, but eventually spoke up. "It was Flash and his lackeys. They caught us off guard and started attacking us," I explained.

Gwen came over and asked if I was okay, cupping my cheeks with a gentle hand. I could feel my face getting warm from her touch. "I'm fine," I said, trying to hide my embarrassment.

She examined my face, I felt a pang of embarrassment. I didn't want her to see me like this, weak and vulnerable. But her concern was genuine and it made me feel a little better.

"I'll be alright," I reassured her, my voice sounding weaker than I wanted it to. "It's just a scratch."

Gwen and I helped Ned up, asking if he needed to go to the nurse's office. He winced in pain and nodded his head, confirming that he did. Gwen looked at me with concern and asked if I was okay, but I just shrugged it off, not wanting to cause any more trouble.

"Let's get you to the nurse's office, Ned," I said, taking one of his arms over my shoulder to support him. Gwen took the other side, and we slowly made our way to the office. Gwen kept checking on me, asking if I was okay, but I just shrugged it off, not wanting to worry her.

As we approached the nurse's office, I saw Ned wince in pain again. "You sure you're okay, man?" I asked him, concerned.

"Yeah, I'll be fine," Ned replied, trying to put on a brave face.

We entered the nurse's office, and the nurse took a look at both me and Ned. She tended to our wounds and gave us ice packs for our bruises. As we sat there in silence, I couldn't help but feel angry and frustrated at what had happened. I feel guilty about what had just happened. Flash had gone too far this time, and I couldn't just stand by and watch him hurt Ned like that. But now, I had to deal with the consequences of my actions. I just hoped that Ned would be okay and that Flash wouldn't come after us again.

We walked out of the nurse's office, I couldn't help but feel grateful to Gwen for being there for us. She may have been skeptical about my injuries, but her concern showed that she cared. I wiped my nose, feeling much better now that the bleeding had stopped.

"We gotta go, guys. Mr. Harrington won't wait forever," Gwen said, reminding us of the bus just arrived moments ago.

Ned and I nodded in agreement. We couldn't afford to miss the bus. Gwen's presence is nice. It was reassuring to have her by our side after what happened with Flash and his lackeys.

We arrived at the bus, Mr. Harrington was waiting for us, his expression expectant. He wasted no time in reminding the class to behave appropriately during the field trip to Oscorp, emphasizing the importance of representing our school well. We all nodded our heads in agreement.

As the bus made its way to Oscorp, I couldn't help but reflect on the events that had just transpired. The bruises and blood from the fight with Flash were still fresh, and I couldn't shake off the feeling of vulnerability. The worst part was feeling helpless and unable to protect my friend Ned when he was being beaten by Flash.

I wished I had the power to help him, to make things right. It wasn't fair that some people were born with abilities that made them strong, while others like us were left to fend for ourselves. But then again, with great power comes great responsibility, as Uncle Ben used to say.

As I looked out the window, lost in my thoughts, I wonder what it would be like to have superhuman strength or the ability to climb walls. Would I be able to protect those I cared about? Or would I end up like so many others, unable to live up to the responsibility that came with great power?

I sighed, knowing that these were just idle thoughts. The reality was that I was just a regular kid, with no powers or abilities. But even if I couldn't be a hero like Spider-Man, I knew that I could still make a difference in my own way, even if it was just by being there for my friends.

Then the bus finally came to a stop, and we all piled out, excited to explore the vast fields of Oscorp. As we made our way towards the entrance, we were greeted by none other than Norman Osborn himself, who welcomed us to the facility with a warm smile.

"Welcome, students! I'm Norman Osborn, and I'm thrilled to have you all here today. I hope you'll find our facility informative and inspiring," he said, gesturing towards the towering building behind him.

I can't help but feel a sense of awe as I gazed up at the impressive structure. It was hard to believe that just moments ago, I had been beaten up and left helpless by Flash and his lackeys. But for now, I pushed those thoughts aside and focused on the excitement of the field trip ahead. I felt a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, things would get better.
