PATH OF THE STAR HUNTER

Shortly after what in many novels is known as  ̈ truck-Kun's visit ̈, I realized that I didn't reincarnate.

From my lucky encounter with the legendary vehicle, I only got several lacerations and bone fractures and a reasonably expensive medical bill. If I had to be honest, I'm not disappointed in the lack of reincarnation or others fantasy elements of the incident.

After all, even though my parents died years ago, I still have my little sister Claire to care for. Even though I call her my sister, she's my foster sister, not that it has any relevance. The fact is that I do not feel comfortable leaving her alone, especially in a post-apocalyptic world like this. It was bad enough to leave alone a 16-year-old girl in the world five years ago, But everything changed that day, the day of the awakening.

Five years ago, on a night like any other, a meteor passed dangerously close to the earth, giving a great scare to half the world. Still, before anyone had time to celebrate not being crushed by a giant stone from space, the event that would later be called the awakening occurred.

An unknown nature's massive amount of energy radiated from the meteor, bathing the entire earth and all living beings in it. The first thing to change was the plants, then the animals; They started to mutate, get stronger and bigger, and eventually develop skills that belong to science fiction.

Fortunately, before everything went to hell, humans also changed; they began to develop extraordinary abilities that allowed them to protect themselves and restore order.

Unfortunately, this took a year to happen. When order was restored, my parents and their best friends (Claire's parents) were already killed in the middle of the chaos. Claire and I survived by a stroke of luck.

Since then, I have worked very hard to support and continue our studies, but things got difficult after the government stopped supporting us. 

At the end of the day, the government needed to dedicate many resources to the army to continue protecting us from the mutant beasts. Then finding work in a world where 75% of the population are skill users, or Esper as we call them can be a big problem when you are a non-user.

As for why I do not want to leave my sister alone, although the order in the world has returned, it is pretty simple. A young girl as beautiful and pure as Claire would already have difficulties living alone.

Now, imagine a world where three-quarters of the population have superpowers, where you never know what kind of psychopath had what type of ability.

In real life, with so many skilled users and skills, it has been virtually impossible for the government to maintain law and order.

The crimes committed by Esper are too many and too difficult to solve. Although the police also have specialized Esper for this, the fact is that the police have not changed much from what they used to be before: they arrive when the damage is done; of course, no one can blame them. It is just the way it is.

This is not a fantasy world where only the worthy and pure of heart were blessed with extraordinary gifts; no, Of course not, there is a new order in the world, and it's not kind to the weak ones. Putting my reasonably fair concerns aside, my current problem is relatively mundane and straightforward; honestly, I don't have money.

Hospital bills are not cheap and were collected directly from my bank accounts. I know why they did things that way; too many people get injured every day and try to get medical attention without paying. Still, even then, damn vampires, they are worse than blood feather snakes (a type of mutant beast that drinks blood).

I guess I'll have to advance my plans; truthfully, Claire and I have had a hard time in the city. Expenses are high, security is low, harassment is no better, and there is no work.

For all the above reasons and more, we decided to sell our tiny apartment in the city and move to the small village my parents left in a small rural town on the city's outskirts. As for selling the villa, it wasn't even an option, Leaving aside that it's been in the family for like 300 years and belonged to a super awesome character. 

The biggest problem is that it is worth nothing; it is not that the property is in poor condition or that the land is small. The real problem is that too many mutant beast attacks are in the vicinity.

It still qualifies as an option to live for us as a couple of siblings because the house is in the least vulnerable part of the small town. And because Claire can continue her studies via the virtual interface.

¨ well, at least we already had our things packed, ¨ exclaims my dear sister.

¨ I'm sorry things end like this. Not only can't I protect you, but I can't even give you a place to live ¨ I said dejectedly.

In any case, for those who were wondering, my name is Desmond Astryd, and my sister is Claire Lynwood. If anyone thinks it is strange that we do not share a last name, they are not paying attention since they should remember that we are not siblings.
