“Why?” He moved even more closer, making her back hit the hedge.
Now she was trapped under him. Not like she wanted to run away in the first place. But the way he challenged her, it did not feel very assuring of his good intentions, in the least.
“You ask why? Why not? I am married to you. Even if that marriage was nothing for you, even if those vows you spoke had nothing in them, they are everything…to me. I did not marry you just for an alliance. I married you because I wanted to bond with you. Start a family.”
“Family?” He gave out a sardonic chuckle that confused her. “There is no family, Lucia.” He spoke her name after a long time. It rolled off his tongue so smoothly that it even shocked him.
Focus, Erebus!
“We are not a family. We never will be. Never. Ever. Listen carefully now.” He pointed at her with his index finger. “You are a just the exchange of this deal. Nothing more. You hear me? Nothing more. So don’t get your expecta—” His mouth stopped as his eyes witnessed tears cascading down his wife’s beautiful eyes.
No matter how much she thought she was strong, it was never enough to take in the difficult words that he spoke. And the worst was…how much his eyes resonated what he said. And that gave her the picture. He was telling her the truth.
She was just the key to win the war that was falling on all of them. Nothing more.
