Odin, hung himself of Yggdrasil for nine days and nine nights to gain the knowledge of other worlds, and he sacrificed his Right eye to drink from the well of knowledge, to gain Unparralled Wisdom, yet not even this was enough for him. it was this Unquenchable thirst that led him to his downfall, yet also his resurrection,
Earthquakes, volcanoes erupting, the seas boiling over, ice caps violently breaking apart, the very sun itself losing color. All strange and unexplained phenomena, to humans, and to another race of advanced and smart people.
Swaying left and right a massive tree was doing something not seen since before it was a sapling, leaves draining of color to a pitch black before blanketing all of existence, branches twisting, the bark sticky from the escaping sap.
Billions of species all militaristic and territorial marching out of their nests deep in the tree, the ants, the wasps, the insects all of them, escaping into the safety of the most healthy and largest branches.
Those civilizations advanced enough to abandon their planes of existence and world's marched on to the large and still healthy branches just above the barren trunk.
"It is upon us my honored warriors, the destined end is creeping toward us, the world tree withers beneath us, Níðhöggr for the first time in eons has begun overcoming Yggdrasil, while the great eagle above has dipped lower and lower looking for prey– The old Order you have brought to existence will burn in the fires of rebirth for it shall harden. Entire planes of existence shall fall, yet you shall stand. You shall drive the Giants and demons below away with the sword! and the spear! and the grand might of Asgard.
The clap of swords to shields, of bows to the marble, of mugs in toast, the shuffle of the armor rocked the endless halls, the surrounding species running around the tree all turned to the sole superpower that dominated all of Yggdrasil.
Billions of Einherjar legions left Valhalla then Asgard proper boarding an equal number of giant longboats all headed for the surrounding outposts before marching upon their supposed enemy. Protecting the immediate periphery and the nearest hundreds of branches was almost every Valkyrie, millions upon millions of ethereal women standing guard above a winged pure white horse
Open were the 640 doors, wide enough for a thousand large men, the sounds of the boots marching out of the halls of Valhalla rang across the entire side of the world tree, lasting for many days until the unending hall was emptied of all of its honored dead.
These uncountable beings devoured an uncountable amount of leaves and fruit hanging from the world tree, further worsening the unknown problem. Hundreds of ravens fluttered out of the hall above the marching men, onto the farthest reaches of the world tree inspecting all of creation, aiding those ravens were a small detachment of Valkyrie along with the specialized and quicker berserker corps.
Deep inside the endless halls of Asgard were the grand palaces of the Norse gods, pure white marble with silver streaks zipping across the massive stones. Wrapped around the massive marble structures were golden leafed trees with white bark, like Christmas wreaths the thousands of trees surrounded each palace.
Meeting in the biggest Palace of them all, Odin's Palace, the twelve major gods – Odin, Thor, Baldr, Vidar, Vale, Brage, Heimdall, Tyr, Njord, Freyr, Ullr, and Forsete, stood around a small round table and while they argued 44 minor gods sat on their luxurious brown stained wooden chairs, all the while looked at each other with helpless expressions.
"I'm telling you, Odin, this is not Ragnarok, there is no snow, no biting frost tearing at our skins, that's not even considering Baldr who still stands at this very table. What about Fjalar, our spies know exactly where and what the rooster is doing, there was no cry signaling the end to the Giants, no cry in Hel galvanizing the dishonorable dead. The sun and moon still shine!".
"What would you have me do? I hung my self of the world tree for untold knowledge, yet even I know not what is happening, but I do know that this hasn't happened, not for many ages" Odin scoffed before heavily slumping down on his majestic throne "my beautiful wife, please tell me that you have found out something with the withering branch".
"Even dead wood from Yggdrasil or previously alive corpses have life in it, its sap is as filled with as much life as you or I have, however, this wood… if I couldn't see It or touch it then I would deny its existence" the woman to his left spoke, "it is an unnatural thing, not something most would be able to do let alone on the scale it is appearing".
"So Yggdrasil is the culprit?".
"What would possibly be able to make the world tree so defensive and pool so much life energy, the great termites have been eating the tree since its creation yet they have made as much progress as Níðhöggr, and even if all of creation took up an axe of the same quality as my hammer or you spear, they might get through the bark in what, 200 generations, maybe three".
"That's enough out of you" Odin commanded harshly "Vidar, Vale, Ullr, Freyr, and Hel you five will take your legions to hell, guard Helgrind and Nágrind make sure those undead do not get out".
"And Thor, Tyr, Eilli, and Njord you all shall go to to the borders of Jotunheimr, I will release thousands of ravens into and across Hel and Útgarðar to help both groups" He finished just before adding a warning "If either the unhonored or Giants step so much as a toe out of line kill them all, show them the might of your legions, of Asgard".
"What shall you do All-Father?" Heimdall asked standing to his right.
"I will be paying a visit to Mimir, he may have the answers I do not, if he proves useless then I will search Yggdrasil myself".
