Cavil suffered from self-blame, and just wanted to find peace for himself. However, his notoriety has already reached far and wide. Aside from that, the allied kingdoms wanted revenge for the purges he did in the past.
Thus, the rise of the heroes. Anyway, his soul was eventually corrupted, and he became the ultimate villain of the story.
In the end, like all other villains, he was met with a tragic ending.
