Not a dog person

*A register is basically a vent cover

I quickly turn around, making my hair smack me in the face. I move my hair and tiptoe to the door. I peer out of the door and my eyes meet another pair. They were a tint of yellow and the pupils were black slits. I slam the door shut and push my back against the door while I lock it. The lock was a rusted chain lock. I slowly walk away from the door while claws are pounding against the door. With a quick scan of the room again, I found a vent by the floor that's just barely propped open. I rip off the register* and climb inside. In the process of closing the vent once more, I hear the door break open. I crawl into the vent where I'll be safe but can still see out. The beast looks like a giant wolf. It has brown, tan, and gray fur. Its face is all scared up and its ankle has a rust stained chain. The giant wolf scans the room then starts sniffing around. As it gets closer, my heart starts to pound faster and faster. It starts pacing the room, howls, then leaves. I hear a big crash then silence. I let my heart calm down and wait to see if the wolf comes back.

I spin myself around and face the inside of the vent. 'I wonder where this leads, maybe I can get to my room without fighting that wolf.' The vent seems pretty straight forward until I get to a corner. I look behind me before I take that corner and I see the wolf staring at me and pawing at the vent. The growls and barks of this wolf are starting to give me a headache as it echoes through the tight space. Its head breaks the vent and the bottom of it starts to fall. I crawl my hardest to get to the other side safely. I reach my hand out for the outside vent and just barely make it in time. My hand is the only thing keeping me from falling into the endless pit. 'This is why I'm not a dog person,' I say under my breath. Using my arms, I shakely pull myself up into another room.

"Why are there so many rooms and no one to use them?" I ask in a whisper as if there was someone to listen. I scan the room I'm in. By the vent I entered from, there is a door to the left and a bed to the right. Right next to the bed is a nightstand and a lamp. It's just as filthy but this room seems more tidy. There aren't rips in the bed, claw marks on the walls, and no symbols can be seen. I'm guessing that either this one is mine, that it's locked or both. Before even bothering the door, I check the vent system once more. The wolf can no longer be seen due to the vent's corner. I sigh a bit of relief and continue looking around the room. I open the top drawer of the nightstand and it's empty, so I move onto the bottom one. The bottom drawer has a clean, rust-free, silver key. Without double thinking, I take the key and pocket it. Taking the key is a mistake because sirens start going off saying something along the lines of 'TEST COMPLETE' over and over again. Then everything goes dark.

The clock wakes me up when it hits 6 am. As I sit up, I get flashbacks from the day before. I don't know what happened to me when it went dark. It could just have been a nightmare again. Or what if it was a test, did I just have to grab that stupid key? And what was with the big wolf? I ignore my thoughts, just like how I ignore my dreams, and open my door with a bit more force than intended, accidently. My eyes widen as I notice what I just did. The door is now in wooden shards on the floor. 'Is the door just light or did I work out in my sleep?' I shrug off my broken door and start running down the hall with curiosity. The pleas and cries of children were back but I didn't pay them much attention. I stop running but I glide right into the man's door and it breaks into a bunch of pieces just like mine.

"I'd say you did a good job ruining two doors in a little amount of time." He says in a light, giddy tone.

"I have questions!" I say without thinking, "Could you answer a few please?"

He stares at me while I sit on the corner of his desk. "Depends on the questions."

"First, how am I so strong? What really happened yesterday? What happened with the big wolf?" As I say 'big wolf' I imitate the wolf with my arms. "The wolf was really cool!"

"I can answer those all with four words. You ate the wolf."

"I did what now? That was a big wolf and I'm so small," I ask myself in a whisper. This just made me more confused but I don't like the fact that I "ate" that cool, scary, wolf.

He just laughs and smiles this weird grin, it creeps me out because it's eerily thin and long and curves up really high on his cheek bones. "Are you ready for your next test?"
