“The Head Teacher was so good to me, kept my job open, and had the whole building overhauled to accommodate my wheelchair while I was off. I wasn’t going to move on after that, was I? And…well, I can’t imagine being anywhere else now. This place is home.”

Her eyes crinkled at the corners when she smiled and her skin glowed in the sunlight. She shook her hair again, dislodging more petals.

“What was it, if you don’t mind me asking? Car accident?”

Anika nodded. “Irreparable damage to my lower spine.”

“You’ve adapted well.”

Her smile wavered. “I had to. Ah, here’s David, Katherine, and Jean.”

With the arrival of the whole English department, another round was ordered and the conversation turned to curriculum texts, lesson planning, and discipline in class. My colleagues were friendly, offering support and useful tips.

“Another?” Anika nodded at my empty glass.
