Chapter 107 - Horde of monsters (1)

After my conversation with the guild leader, some time passed. During that period, me and the girls dedicated practically the whole day to completing guild quests in order to accumulate a good amount of money. The reason for this necessity was simple, we needed to buy armor before the monsters arrived in town.

Overall, we managed to achieve that goal. We wore regular clothes available in this world, but the armor was an essential addition. In my case, I opted for a black trench coat, while the girls chose similar feminine versions.

Although it may seem like these clothes won't withstand many attacks since they're made of fabric, they actually have enchantments that make them more resistant than they appear. We chose this type of defense instead of metal armor or other materials because they allow us greater mobility. Although a bit more expensive, the investment was worth it.

Additionally, after completing all the quests, I was promoted to Rank E, while the girls were promoted to Rank C. From what we heard, they can only reach Rank B after making significant contributions to the guild.

"There seems to be more than we thought there would be"

Said the guild master. At that moment, we were on top of the city walls, looking towards the forest that extended a considerable distance. Dark spots dotted the horizon as far as the eye could see. While these spots represented monsters, as the guild leader had warned, there were much more than we expected, far more than we would like to count.

With us were my companions, the party Dawn Roses, Eldric's wife Lyra, and many other adventurers who chose to stay and face the monsters. I was surprised to find that we had a larger contingent than initially anticipated. Only a few adventurers chose to leave Guinovam. Honestly, I had hoped that our ranks would be enough to contain the advance of these creatures.

However, I have my doubts if my strength will be enough to face this horde of monsters. Although I possess considerable strength, I have never encountered such a large quantity of enemies all at once. Even if I manage to defeat all the monsters, I can't guarantee that the city will withstand and remain standing during this battle.

"We will probably be fine... no, we need to ensure that everyone is fine"

I affirmed with determination in my voice. It was not just a matter of saving the adventurers or the city itself, but a responsibility I felt in my heart. I couldn't simply leave and let a city be destroyed, especially knowing that part of the blame fell on me. Additionally, I saw this situation as an opportunity for growth. In this battle, I would certainly acquire valuable skills that would be an investment for the future.

After a few minutes of contemplation, the black spots on the horizon began to take on distinct shapes, becoming visible from our position on the city walls. A haunting diversity of monsters mixed on the horizon, some flying through the skies, others crawling on the ground, and there were even those running at high speeds, both on four legs and two. It was an impressive and, at the same time, intimidating sight.

"It seems the time has come"

Commented Eldric at my side. On the horizon, the first rays of sun began to illuminate the sky as if announcing the imminent start of the battle. With that certainty in my heart, I stood up from the edge of the wall and directed my gaze towards my companions. As soon as they caught my eye, they all nodded in a determined gesture, making it clear that they were ready to act.

With the assurance that my companions were prepared, I turned to the side and observed Eldric delivering a brief motivational speech to the other adventurers. His wife, by his side, carefully adjusted his equipment. Interestingly, the equipment consisted only of a glove on his hand. Although I was intrigued by the fighting abilities of the Demi-humans, I knew I wouldn't have time to be distracted by observations.

As I alternated my gaze between the approaching monsters and Eldric, I noticed that he had finished his speech and was wielding his imposing sword, just like the other adventurers around him. Among them, I also spotted Galen, fighting bravely to protect the city. Even though I thought it would be wiser for him to have fled the city with his daughter, I understood that traveling was no longer a viable option due to the horde of monsters. Perhaps he had no choice but to fight by our side.

Returning my gaze forward, I made an instant decision. It was time to act.

"Storage"

Opening my storage, I retrieved a black sword. Unlike weapons created with my abilities, this sword was forged with enchantments, providing significantly greater cutting power. Although it may have slightly less durability, I was certain of its lethal effectiveness.

After reaching the edge of the wall, I looked down and realized it was a considerable drop, certainly nothing to play around with. However, that was the least of my problems. Now that I was no longer human, I probably wouldn't feel any impact from falling from such a great height.

With a calm sigh in my mind, I leaped without even looking back, ignoring the gazes of the people watching me. As I descended in freefall towards the ground, my gaze turned once again to the horizon, where the horde of monsters was rapidly approaching the wall.

As soon as I landed on the ground, I started running towards the monsters. Before getting too close to them, I abruptly stopped and placed my hand on the ground. With a whisper, I invoked my elemental manipulation ability, and within seconds, the ground in front of me transformed into a sea of ice. The approaching monsters had their movements slowed down as their feet became frozen, getting trapped in the ice.

Immediately after, gripping the hilt of my sword firmly, I infused it with my ability, allowing the wind to envelop the blade and make it even sharper.
